Ely Road to close beginning Oct. 5 for culvert replacement project

ELY– Due to a culvert replacement, Ely Road will be closed starting on Monday, Oct. 5. The closure will be from Wright Brothers to Fuhrmeister Street in Ely and is expected to last seven to 10 days.
Ely Road will be closed to through traffic, but local residents will maintain access to their properties. There will be a posted detour.

Solon High School Homecoming Court announced

The 2015 homecoming court for the Solon Community School District was announced last week in advance of Homecoming Week. The king was to be named at the Homecoming Parade Wednesday evening, while the queen will be crowned at halftime of Solon’s varsity football game against Central DeWitt Friday. Hawks soar to 4-0 start

In my preseason stories about the Hawkeye football team, I thought if Iowa opened the football season 3-1 they could have a good year.
They are 4-0 and you can’t do any better than that.
The Big Ten season starts this Saturday at Wisconsin.
For the rest of the season, the Hawks will probably be underdogs to the Badgers, Nebraska, Minnesota and maybe Northwestern.
Wisconsin, Nebraska and Northwestern are on the road, while the Hawks host the Gophers in a night game at Kinnick Stadium Nov. 14.

Ned L. Allen

Ned L. Allen, 82, a lifelong Tiffin area farmer, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of pancreatic cancer.
Friends gathered with family Sept. 24, at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home in Iowa City. He asked for a private family burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin, which will take place later.

Food For Thought

Over the years, I’ve seen word fads come and go. You know the sort of thing I mean, remember when nearly everybody referred to supplies and equipment as “materiel” rather than “material?” The first version refers to military supplies and equipment, specifically those necessary to conduct a war, but that didn’t stop people from using it to refer to everything from the school supplies needed by a kindergarten student to stocking the larders and pantries of a cruise ship.
