October 14th

Great shakes

NL’s fourth annual dog plunge makes a splash

NORTH LIBERTY– Tails were wagging and wet fur was flying at the North Liberty Aquatic Center, Sept. 10 and 11, during the city’s fourth annual Doggie Plunge event.
Each year as the city closes its outdoor pool to human customers, Aquatics Director Katie Gerot and her staff get ready to entertain four-legged friends who also enjoy getting wet. In order to be pet-friendly, the water must be properly prepared by cutting off chemical treatments and dropping the water level below the system’s filters.

Moving forward with police, citizen relationships in NL

NLPD strategizes to bring cops and kids together on the court

NORTH LIBERTY — Everyone knows they serve and protect; but on Saturday, Oct. 24, North Liberty residents will find out if their sworn police officers got game, too.
The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) will host its first “Hoops with a Cop” event at the North Liberty Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon, with the officers taking to the basketball court to meet the public and have a little fun.

Spartan Wrestling Club starts with meeting on Monday, Nov. 2

SOLON– As the temperature outside begins to drop, the action in the Solon wrestling room starts to heat up. This year is no exception as The Spartan Wrestling Club prepares to begin another successful season. The emphasis continues to be on learning the fundamentals of wrestling and having fun.

Rough October so far for Lady Spartans

DeWITT– Heading into Senior Night Oct. 13, the month had not been kind to Solon’s varsity volleyball team.
Its only two wins came at a Waverly tournament Oct. 3, and both against Crestwood.
The Lady Spartans dropped to 7-20 on the season heading into the final home match against Anamosa, having been swept by Central DeWitt, No. 1 (4A) West Delaware, and several ranked teams at a Cedar Rapids tournament Oct. 10.
In addition, the team lost senior Josey Hajek to a sprained ankle at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite, the second time this season she’s been sidelined by injury.

Home stretch ahead

Boys finish 11th, girls 10th at North Linn

TROY MILLS– The stakes go up in the final days of the 2015 cross country season. Solon’s boys and girls go from Thursday’s WaMaC conference meet to the state qualifier next week, and hopefully on to state, Oct. 31.

Solon defeated by Maquoketa, 21-17

Who will step up?

MAQUOKETA– “Who are those guys?” A line, repeated time and again, by Butch Cassidy in the 1969 movie, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
It was a line repeated on Friday night when the Maquoketa Cardinals defeated the Solon Spartans, 21-17.
With several players capable of making an impact on the game sidelined, the Spartans seemed vulnerable and needed some supporting players to step up.
Who were those guys?

There to help

Rural Health and Safety Clinic faces many challenges

For four years, Roger Stutsman and Kelley Donham have been trying to convince farmers they are not from the government, and they truly are there to help.
