West engages unconventional learners through iJAG program

Three years of success at City, West signs onto program

IOWA CITY– The day’s agenda was printed neatly on the white board in Iowa City High School’s iJAG classroom.
It read: Pictionary™, Name that Tune, Trivia Question, Balloon Challenge.
It may sound like an easy class period. But the real lessons of the classroom game day aren’t written on the board. They’re harder to learn, harder to teach and crucial for life after high school: Communication skills, leadership development, problem-solving and teamwork.
It’s a lot to pack into a round of Pictionary. But the students are up for the challenge.

Start with art

North Liberty Library commissions artwork for children’s area

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library (NLCL) has long been a place dedicated to building well-rounded individuals; a place to have deep discussions about serious matters or join light-hearted talks about the latest best-seller, to learn about social issues, meet influential authors and community leaders; to play games and build with Lego blocks and try your hand at knitting.
Soon, patrons will become a little more cultured in other fine arts, as well.

Rounding first and heading toward second

Officials pitch dirt for Penn Meadows sports pavilion

NORTH LIBERTY– A major project in Penn Meadows Park is in full swing.
A groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 21 marked the spot for the new Penn Meadows Park Pavilion and Commemorative Baseball Diamond, a collaborative project between the City of North Liberty and the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) organization. The new pavilion will include a concession stand, a shelter with seating, a storage area and much-needed restrooms.
NLYBS President Scott Rundle led off the event with remarks about the facility.

Western Dubuque sweeps Lady Spartans

Digging for a Cure Cancer Night Oct. 13

SOLON– The Lady Spartans will look for an uplifting end to their regular season Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The Solon varsity volleyball team will honor seniors Mikayla Long, Dakota Doyle and Josey Hajek for the final home game of the year hosting Anamosa.
The Lady Spartans will also be hosting a fundraiser, “Digging for a Cure Cancer Night,” featuring a silent auction, bake sale and 50/50 raffle with all proceeds to benefit the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center.

Solon second at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– The power of a point.
Solon’s and Williamsburg’s girls could not have been much closer in the point spread Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Williamsburg’s seven-team cross country invitational. As the fifth and final scoring runners cleared the finish line, though, it was the Raiders 34-35 over the Spartans for the meet win.
Solon’s boys also grabbed the runner-up plaque; again with Williamsburg taking first, with a 32-43 margin.

Girls down to the wire

Spartans blank Central Clinton Dewitt Sabers, 41-0

Spartans return to Paradise

There was something about the crescendo of excitement, as AC/DC howled “Back in Black” and Guns and Roses’ belted out “Paradise City” through the scoreboard speakers, when the Spartans returned to their home field Friday, Oct. 2, that had everyone on the edge of their seat.
The crisp football air, the chilling breeze and the roar of the home team filled the night, as the Solon Spartans blanked the Central Clinton Sabers, 41-0, on Friday night.

With a target goal of $400,000, the commission is asking residents to step forward with contributions for a community splash pad.
And according to commission member Kelsey Bumsted, over 30 individuals have already kicked in nearly $5,000.

IDOT shares project plan with public

CORALVILLE– About 150 people attended a public information meeting last week at the Coralville Public Library to learn more about the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) planned Interstate 80/I-380 interchange upgrade and new Forevergreen interchange project.
Several long tables held aerial view maps of the areas that will be affected by the construction. Although no presentation was made, officials were on hand to answer questions posed those in attendance.
