West High places sixth on MVC All-Division Volleyball Teams

Tauchen earns First Team Honors

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY— Six West High Women of Troy varsity volleyball players earned spots on the Mississippi Valley athletic Conference’s (MVC) All-Division Volleyball Teams for 2015. The list, released on Tuesday, Nov. 3, shows Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Anna Fluent as the Valley Division (West’s home in the conference) Athlete of the Year while Cedar Falls’ Matt Johnson is the division Coach of the Year. Katie Busswitz, of Cedar Rapids Prairie, is the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year while Lynnette Stecklein, also of Prairie, is the division Coach of the Year.

Solitary junior to lead Women of Troy

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Coach B.J. Mayer returns only one starter from last year’s West High Women of Troy varsity basketball team, but if that worries him, as is his trademark, it doesn’t show.
Ali Tauchen, a junior, is the solitary starter back from the 23-4 squad that fell in a Class 5A State Tournament semifinal game to West Des Moines Valley last March. Three of last year’s starting five– Mikaela Morgan, Dani Craig and Grace Tafolla– were lost to graduation, while fellow junior Emily Halverson isn’t going out for basketball this season.

Trojans loaded with seasoned seniors

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Steve Bergman and his West High Trojans had hoped to win an unprecedented fourth-straight Class 4A State Championship back in March, but were foiled by North Scott in the semifinal round and forced to settle for third place with a consolation round win over Des Moines Hoover.
Bergman, with 30 years of coaching under his belt, is in his 26th season at West and is well-positioned for another run at state with a well-seasoned, battle-tested corps of seniors.

The boys are back... minus the big guy

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– His obvious presence on the hardwood will be missed.
Drew Wagner, at 6’-5”, had the height of a basketball player, and north of 300 pounds, the weight of a football lineman– which he also played for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers. It was that combination of height and weight that also made him a dominating offensive machine for the Clippers varsity basketball team last season. Wagner led the Clippers with 14.3 points per game in a 16-7 campaign ending in a Class 3A district final against rival Williamsburg.

Clipper girls up to the challenge

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN — Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls varsity coach P.J. Sweeney addressed the biggest and most obvious question about his Creek Girls in the upcoming season.
“How will you replace the nine seniors that graduated from last year’s team? A team that had its first winning season in 14 years?” he posed. “The simple answer is, it won’t be easy, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

CCA Marching Band will hold craft fair to raise funds for trip to Washington, D.C.

Kent Park Campground now closed

TIFFIN– The Johnson County Conservation Department announced the F.W. Kent Park Campground closed for the season on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Hills Campground is open for camping year-round.

City of NL reminds residents of snow policy

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty reminds residents snow emergencies go into effect automatically with a snowfall of two inches, or when one is declared by city administration. The goal is to allow North Liberty’s streets to be cleared efficiently, so travel is safer and melting snow can drain quickly.
When a snow emergency is in effect, on-street parking is prohibited; cars can be ticketed every 12 hours or towed. More information about snow emergencies is available at northlibertyiowa.org/snow.

CCA to host Dec. 11 fundraiser dinner to support local family

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School family of staff and students are coming together to raise money for Jane and Jeff Astor, longtime teacher and coaches at CCA.
On Dec. 11, CCA High School will host a pasta dinner fundraiser during the boys’ basketball game against Center Point Urbana. The evening will include a silent auction and dessert auction. The fundraiser will assist with the medical costs and travel expenses associated with Jeff’s medical treatments.
