AMES– It’s that time of the year again: cooler nights, shorter days, harvest wrapping up – the perfect time to reflect on the growing season and consider improvements to better achieve farm goals next year. Practical Farmers of Iowa is set to kick off its fall farminar series in November to offer practical knowledge for row crop, livestock or fruit and vegetable farmers looking to improve their operations. The webinar series, called “farminars,” is free for anyone with an internet connection to tune in and participate.

WESTERN– The Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club will hold its Thanksgiving turkey dinner and auction Saturday, Nov. 14, at the clubhouse at 11808 Club Rd., in Western, with a 5 p.m. social hour and a 6 p.m. meal. A fundraising auction will be held at 7 p.m.

Robert H. Geick, 89, of Pomeroy, passed away on Oct. 28, 2015, at the Pomeroy Care Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 2, at Our Savior United Methodist Church in Manson with Rev. Deb Parkinson officiating. Burial was at Union Cemetery at Pomeroy. A visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 1, at The Michael Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home in Pomeroy.

I’ve been told that music is a mathematical skill, people who are good at math are also good at music, and composing music is a matter of patterns and equations similar to those found in numbers. You’ll have to take somebody else’s word for it because, although I was a whiz at math up through high school, it failed to spill over into the piano and guitar lessons thrust upon me for seven or eight years before my parents gave up hope.

MOUNT VERNON— Two days after sweeping the South Tama Trojans, 3-0, on Senior Night, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls trounced the Trojans again, this time 2-0 in WaMaC Tournament Pool Play in Mount Vernon. The Clippers took the two-game match, 21-18 and 21-4, with Ashley Prusha’s nine kills leading the way. Alyssa Weldon added six kills while Lauren Helle had three. Weldon led in assists with nine while Riley Hennes put up eight. Prusha and Sheyanne Koethe had seven digs apiece.
