“Better than a dream”

Solon’s Ginkens goes Hollywood and finds “Western Religion”

SOLON– It’s easy to call Solon’s Bill Ginkens a Renaissance man. He’s been a photographer, painter, musician, horseman and short-order cook at the former Reggie’s Weenies in downtown Solon. Now, he adds actor to his list of accomplishments.
Ginkens landed a role in the independent movie Western Religion, written and produced by James O’Brien, without even trying.

It don’t come easy

The headline was a song in 1971 by Ringo Starr which really tells the story about the Hawkeye football season.
The Minnesota Gophers were in town last Saturday at Kinnick Stadium and to say the game was electric would be an understatement.
The black-out crowd, the retro all-black jerseys and when they played “Back in Black” like they do to start the game, you knew it was going to be special.

Eldon F. Hosek

Eldon F. Hosek, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center from a brief illness. Services were held Saturday, Nov. 14, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial in Anderson Cemetery near Swisher.

Riverview Park

Going to Riverview was a big deal.
In the late 1800s, the area was used as a shooting range by a group of German immigrants who fought in the Austro-Prussian War, AKA the Seven Weeks’ War. Germans fought on either side of that quick but brutal conflict over real estate. By the early 1900s, however, the old guard died off and the new guard decided to turn it into a park, and then an amusement park.

Giving thanks

Food For Thought

You sneeze; “Gesundheit,” says your friend. You say, “Thanks.” The waitress deposits your hamburger and fries on the table. “Thanks,” you murmur, reaching for the ketchup. The check-out girl tells you to have a nice day. You mutter something that sounds like, “thanks,” even though you know she doesn’t care because she’s busy asking the next person in line if they found everything okay. Most of us say “thanks” several times every day. Dozens of times in a month. Hundreds of times during the year. That doesn’t mean we’re grateful; it simply means that we’re polite.
