Equipment damage slows North Liberty leaf collection

NORTH LIBERTY– Leaf collection in North Liberty will be slowed due to the destruction of one of the city’s vacuum trucks. The damage was caused when a piece of concrete, obscured by leaves at the curb for collection, was sucked into the truck’s impeller. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Repair will require the truck to be out of service through the end of leaf collection, limiting collection to a single crew working with older, less efficient equipment.

NL boy to be Kid Captain when Hawks take on Indiana Nov. 7

IOWA CITY– Lincoln Ortman, 5, son of Chris and Missy Ortman of North Liberty, will serve as Kid Captain when the Hawkeyes take on Indiana on Nov. 7.
Lincoln was born with a hemangioma– a non-cancerous growth caused by an abnormal collection of blood vessels– that started on his leg. By the time he was 5 months old, it had become segmented and spread up his leg and into his diaper area. When his parents grew concerned about the birthmark bleeding, they took him to their dermatologist.

Proposed interchange to be discussed Nov. 18 in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting Wednesday, Nov. 18, to discuss the proposed interchange at West Forevergreen Road and Interstate 380 near North Liberty, in Johnson County. This includes proposed improvements along West Forevergreen Road from Jasper Avenue Northwest, east to Highway 965.

NL Fire Department responds to deck fire extinguished by building’s fire sprinkler system

NORTH LIBERTY– At 3:10 a.m. last Friday, Oct. 30, the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) was dispatched to 280 Sadler Ln. in North Liberty for a building fire alarm. While responding to the location, the North Liberty Police Department advised that water was flowing from the rear deck of a condominium with a smell of smoke in the area. The first-arriving North Liberty units found a three-story, 12-unit condo building with no smoke or fire visible from the exterior but did find an activated sprinkler head on the third-story deck.

No middle ground for Tiffin minimum wage

TIFFIN– What was proposed as a compromise in Tiffin’s minimum wage debate failed to bring two opposing views together.

NL contractor licensing on hold

NORTH LIBERTY– Lack of a full council halted North Liberty’s action on a new rule requiring builders to be licensed to build in the city.

TIFFIN— At Clear Creek Amana (CCA) middle school, dealing with continued delays in the construction of a much-needed addition has caused the school district’s initial backup plan to give way to several subsequent contingency plans, said Principal Brad Fox.

Spartans fall to West Delaware Hawks in second round of 3A football playoffs

MANCHESTER– It was a beautiful night for football, Monday, Nov. 2, as the Solon Spartans traveled to Manchester to meet the undefeated West Delaware Hawks. The Spartans fell behind in the first quarter, 7-0, and the Hawks scored again early in the second quarter. But it appeared Solon was on the brink of a repeat of its Wednesday battle with Washington when they rallied just before half with a score. At the half, West Delaware led, 14-7, but Solon seemed ready to start knocking.

Spartans defeat Demons in OT

“Revenge is a dish that tastes best when it is cold.” – Don Corleone, “The Godfather,” 1969.
WASHINGTON– The Spartans listened to the old adage Oct. 28 and defeated the Washington Demons in overtime, exorcizing a week-five loss, 17-14.
Solon traveled south to Case Field in Washington, the site of a less-than-stellar performance in week five, to meet the Washington Demons in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The evening, wrapped in a cold fall embrace, was a defense-grinding, momentum-shifting chess match of football at its finest.

FORT DODGE– Three years ago, Trisha Coberly wasn’t even on the team. Last weekend, she was Solon’s lone runner at the state cross country meet.
In her third year of competition, Coberly made the Class 3A field, and finished 68th of the 139 girls (in 20:49) over the rolling hills at Kennedy Park near Fort Dodge. She earned the berth through her sixth-place finish earlier in the month at the state qualifying meet. This is the first season Iowa high school girls have run 5 kilometers in competition.
