OELWEIN– Despite an inexperienced lineup, the Solon varsity wrestlers captured another tournament title over the weekend.
With 219.5 team points, Solon edged out second-place Byron High School’s (Ill.) 216 points to claim the title at the Oelwein Invitational Dec. 15.
Oelwein (195 points) placed third at its own invitational while Crestwood came in fourth with 185 points.

SOLON– It’s a 4-0 start for the Solon varsity boys basketball team.
The Spartans continued the undefeated start to the season with a 67-45 win over Central DeWitt at home Dec. 8 and a 77-64 victory over Western Dubuque on the road Dec. 11.
In both games, Solon jumped out to an early lead, shot a high percentage from the floor and enjoyed a marked advantage at the free throw line.
The Spartans limited the Sabers to 13 first-half points in the Dec. 8 home win.

Thanksgiving Day dinner guests of Drew and Susan Smith, in Cedar Rapids, were Parker and Mary Jo Smith and daughter, of Ankeny; Shannon Smith, of Creston; Rachel Smith, of Marion; Bud Lingel and Phyllis Fiala.

Mickey and Deb Machacek were Thanksgiving Day dinner guests at the home of Barney and Betty Retterath at Meyer. Deb spent a few more days there.

Rebecca See spent the Thanksgiving weekend at the home of Ronald See. Tim See joined them for dinner on Thanksgiving Day.

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Salvation Army has been welcomed into the Solon community. Sam’s Main Street Market is hosting a countertop Red Kettle to support the “Give Hope Today” holiday season.
Solon community member Alison Holroyd contacted the Johnson County Salvation Army to get her town involved this Christmas. With the support of Sam’s Main Street Market, a countertop Red Kettle has been placed by the check-out register. A Salvation Army bell accompanies the kettle and will be rung with each donation though Dec. 24.
