Schintler wins individual honors, advances to State

DAVENPORT– Iowa City West High sent one bowler to the state tournament, held Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Des Moines.
Senior Heath Schintler won the Regional Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Davenport to advance. Schintler bowled 501 and led the Trojans to a second-place finish with 2,829. Muscatine won the boys’ Regional Championship with 3,226.
The West High girls placed fourth with 2,182 behind Muscatine (2,985), Bettendorf (2,830) and rival City High (2,793).
Brooke Kreiss led the Women of Troy with 371.

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley High School Athletic Conference (MVC) released its All-Division selections for the 2014-2015 wrestling season Monday, Feb. 16.
Nine Iowa City West High wrestlers earned spots on the First, Second or Honorable Mention team lists in the Valley Division.
Nelson Brands, a freshman, earned Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament as well as a First Team spot. Brands posted a 32-13 record at 126 pounds.

Clipper girls go down at Mt. Pleasant

Quarterfinal loss ends season

MOUNT PLEASANT– Their season ended with a decisive loss on the road, but for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, it’s still a winning season; the first in at least a decade for the girls basketball program.
The Clippers took a 13-8 record on the road to Mount Pleasant for a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game against the 17-4, 14th-ranked Panthers and found themselves on the wrong side of a 52-39 final score.
Coach P. J. Sweeney’s Clippers took a slim 6-5 lead in the first quarter but were down by the same one-point margin, 12-11 at the half.

Islanders no problem for Trojans basketball

West 57, DeLaSalle 42

IOWA CITY– It was advertised as something of a clash of the high school basketball titans: three-time Iowa State Champions Iowa City West vs. three-time Minnesota State Champions DeLaSalle from Minneapolis. In the end it was just another day at the office for the West High Trojans as they maintained their perfect record with a 57-42 win Saturday, Feb. 21, at home.

West girls fry Muskies

54-28 win sends West to regional final

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy easily took care of the Muscatine Muskies in a Class 5A regional semifinal basketball game Saturday, Feb. 21, at home, winning 54-28. The win improved West’s record to 20-2 overall and put them on a collision course with Pleasant Valley (18-4) in a regional final Tuesday, Feb. 24, at West.
The Women of Troy also handily took care of Pleasant Valley, winning 45-27 and ensuring a berth at the state tournament.

Six Trojans see action at state wrestling

Rohweder’s third place is West’s highest

DES MOINES– Tanner Rohweder’s third-place finish was the highest among the six West High Trojans to take to the mats of the State Wrestling Tournament held Thursday, Feb. 19, through Saturday, Feb. 21, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Rohweder defeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Nolan Hromidko in a 4-3 decision during the third place match at 120 pounds.
Donovan Doyle placed fourth at 182 pounds, John Milani was seventh at 170 and Aaron Stumpf was eighth at 113. Nate Kelsay (160) and Blake Moser (285) did not place after early losses.

Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo: attendance and eagles rebound

JOHNSON COUNTY– The weather was more cooperative this year for the third annual Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo, held Feb. 7, at the Coralville Lake and North Central Junior High in North Liberty.
Last year, an early morning snowstorm and icy conditions kept attendance down, but this time, the sun was shining and the temperatures mild, bringing the best attendance the event has seen, including the birds.

Reserve your space at North Liberty farmer’s market

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty farmers’ market vendor applications are now available for Penn Landing Market’s 2015 season. After last year’s pilot program, the market will be expanded and held every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting in May. The market will run through October.
Seasonal passes are just $230, with single-day passes available for $12 if space is available. Applications are available at pennlandingmarket.org/sell, by e-mailing pennlandingmarket@gmail.com or by calling 847-707-9999.

City will appeal $80K award

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council voted unanimously to appeal the amount of compensation awarded to a property owner in a disputed condemnation case.
The council discussed the case in closed session at its regular meeting, rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 23, before reconvening in open session to hold the vote. No comments were made in open session.
