Sign up now for Optimists’ Avenue of the Flags 2015

NORTH LIBERTY– Since 2011, the Optimist Club of North Liberty has been helping North Liberty residents display their patriotism.
The organization’s Avenue of Flags program is now in its fifth year, and the Optimists encourage everyone to sign up to celebrate their American spirit.

NLFD to host annual Bob Parker Blood Drive on Monday, May 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department would like to invite the public to participate in the Annual Bob Parker Blood Drive on Monday May 4, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Fire Station, located at 25 W. Cherry St. in North Liberty. Bob has been a member of the North Liberty Fire Department since 1971, but his ability to respond to calls and assist his community was reduced on March 7, 2012, when he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The blood drive, named in his honor, was first offered in 2013 to replenish the 60 units of blood Bob used during his recovery.

Soil restoration demonstration to take place in North Liberty May 3

JOHNSON COUNTY– The city of North Liberty is joining with the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District (JCSWCD) to organize a soil quality restoration (SQR) demonstration this weekend.
The SQR demonstration in North Liberty will be from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, and will be held at Mike and Kelly Joseph’s property at 1485 Red Oak Dr.in North Liberty.

Local vet to present information about declawing

IOWA CITY– Veterinarian and animal shelter director Jennifer Doll, DVM, of Witty Kitties, Inc., near Solon, will present “The Paw Project” at the Iowa City Public Library Meeting Room B on Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m.
“The Paw Project” is a documentary film that chronicles the efforts of a veterinarian and the grassroots movement she founded to protect cats against declawing. A discussion will follow the presentation. Find more on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PawProject, or email Doll at jkdoll@gmail.com.

Award-winning writer to leave mark on libraries in NL, Coralville

NORTH LIBERTY– Next month, Kevin Haworth, author of the Samuel Goldberg Foundation Prize-winning novel “The Discontinuity of Small Things,” will transform glass into literary art that connects two libraries in Johnson County.
Haworth, a Grin City Collective writer-in-residence from Athens, Ohio, will install an excerpt from his forthcoming essay, “Vivaldi,” in the widows of the North Liberty and Coralville libraries.

North Liberty’s farmers market kicks off this Sunday, May 3

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s farmers’ market, relaunched last year as Penn Landing Market, will start its second season on Sunday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will feature 24 purveyors of local produce, farm-fresh and handmade goods, ready-to-eat food and more.

Ironic comedy is Pete Huch’s curtain call

TIFFIN — For 11 years, Pete Huch has been the director of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) high school drama department. On Saturday April 11, as the curtain came down on the third and final performance of Little Shop of Horrors, the show ended and Huch’s time as department director went dark.
“I wouldn’t say I’m giving it up,” Huch said, “but I’m allowing someone else to entertain the audiences.”
The show centers on a man-eating plant from outer space and a number of people trying to find better lives for themselves. For Huch it was a bit more.

TIFFIN– Who needs tax incentives to locate a business in a growing community?
It was a question raised on Wednesday, April 22, as the Tiffin City Council prepared to approve the city’s first economic development policy that will guide future decisions on incentives for new or expanding businesses.

Board approves changes to 10-year facilities master plan

IOWA CITY– As the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) continues to change, its facilities must change along with it.
At the Tuesday, April 14, school board meeting, administration recommended an update to the current facilities master plan, which includes a revamping of junior high and high school athletic plans.
The master plan was created in 2012, and due to increasing enrollment projections, district officials realized there wouldn’t be enough seats at several schools.
