Connor Ham is Drake champion

DES MOINES– Solon senior Connor Ham captured his first Drake Relays title in the 110-meter high hurdles Friday.
In doing so, Ham avenged the disappointment he experienced last year after falling and failing to qualify for the finals in the 2014 Drake 110-meter high hurdles.
He is also the two-time defending state champion in his event at the 3A level, having set a new state record in that event at last year’s meet.
Ham won his preliminary heat with a time of 14.71 seconds, but posted a 14.31 in the final.

Gunnells wins second shot put championship

DES MOINES– Late Friday, Shelby Gunnells was still at the Drake track; watching as her teammates wrapped up their events in the high school division of the Drake Relays, one of the nation’s most prestigious track meets.
Her work was done.
“It feels like it was so long ago,” she said and smiled, thinking back to her morning in the shot put ring. That is where she rang up her second consecutive girls shot put title.

Twin titles for solon at Drake Relays

Solon’s Shelby Gunnells follows through on a throw in the 2015 Drake Relays high school shot put. Gunnells won the competition to match her 2014 Drake title.

Ham won the event in 14.31 seconds, the fastest time of all preliminaries as well as the final. Ham placed second in the event as a sophomore and missed the finals last year as a junior.
