Boundary scenarios still under discussion; new resource allocation model to be reviewed

IOWA CITY– It was boundary scenarios, take four.
Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) board members and administration met again to discuss possible high school and junior high boundaries at the Tuesday, April 14, school board meeting.

NLYBS hits it out of the park with annual field clean-up day

NORTH LIBERTY– Talk about cleanup batters.
It was a huge day at the ballpark, as more than 630 people joined North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) leaders to help with the league’s annual Field Enhancement Day on Saturday, March 28, at Penn Meadows Park in North Liberty.

Solon boys third at Marengo, fourth at Jesse Day Relays

DAVENPORT– Solon’s boys notched two solid track and field performances last week, taking third place at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational in Marengo and fourth place at the mixed-school Jesse Day Co-Ed Relays in Davenport.
Tuesday, April 21, the Spartans will host the Denny Gruber Relays, named in honor of longtime head boys track coach and teacher Denny Gruber. On Friday and Saturday, several members of the team (yet to be determined) will participate at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines. WaMaC, district, and state meets will be held in mid-May.

DES MOINES– Twas a time, when a couple qualifiers for the Drake Relays were a big deal for Solon and many schools. Billed as ‘America’s Amateur Athletic Classic,’ the Relays (through this weekend in Des Moines) have been a showcase for college and world-class athletes, as well as the best of Iowa’s high schools for a century.

Kick-off will be an all-alumni banquet at Celebration Farm Friday, Sept. 18, followed by Saturday morning tours, music and skits in the big Chautauqua tent located on Solon’s Recreation and Nature Area grounds. Ecumenical services and music in the big tent Sunday.

Lakeview PTO hosts 4th annual Spartan Dash Saturday, April 25

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will be hosting its 4th annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 25, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a “family team.” Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the one-mile trail in the Solon Nature and Recreation Area. Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to generate laughter.

Solon Women’s Club to host May Day breakfast Saturday, May 2

SOLON– The GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club will be hosting a May Day Breakfast at the Solon Methodist Church from 7-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2. Egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk will be served.

Solon Legion breakfast April 26

SOLON– Solon American Legion will be serving pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, juice, coffee and milk at a special legion breakfast on Sunday, April 26, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. The breakfast is all-you-can eat and the cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12, with 5 and under dining for free. All proceeds will help pay for the Legion façade improvement project.

Soil quality restoration demonstrations in Solon and North Liberty on April 26 and May 3

IOWA CITY– The City of Solon and the City of North Liberty are joining with the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District (JCSWCD) to organize a soil quality restoration (SQR) demonstration for each community.
The SQR demonstration in Solon will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, at the Timber Dome Lodge at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area off of Racine Avenue. The SQR demonstration in North Liberty will be from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, and will be held at Mike and Kelly Joseph’s property located at 1485 Red Oak Drive in North Liberty.
