May 6th

Austin “Flash” Schroeder

Austin “Flash” Schroeder, 15, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Tuesday morning, April 28, 2015. A heartfelt thank you goes out to his nurses and doctors at UIHC who managed his pain and helped us through the hardest days of our lives. Austin continued to Win The Day, every day, to the very end. As of this morning, the cancer lost the battle as it is dead and Austin’s spirit lives on free of cancer and free of pain. He has truly Won The Day.
Funeral Mass was held Friday, May 1, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, with a visitation and services.

Robert Eagle

Robert J. Eagle, 53, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2015, at his home. A funeral service was held on Monday, May 4, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation was Sunday, May 3, at the funeral home. Burial took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in rural Nichols.

Flagging memories

My earliest recollection of reverence for the flag goes back to my freshman year in high school. My grandfather, a WWI veteran, passed away and there was a family discussion of what to do with the flag that draped over his coffin. Typically, widows kept it, folded neatly into a triangle and encased in a box. Ever-practical Grandma Fleck, however, didn’t like the idea of something meant to be displayed for all to see sitting in a fancy box on a table in her apartment.

A dissappearing tradition

Last Friday was May Day and I didn’t see a single May basket. That was a big deal when I was a child. “Tomorrow is May Basket Day,” Mother would say, and we would scramble to the hall closet where, somewhere in it’s back recesses, there would be the old wallpaper sample book that we last used to redecorate the dollhouse or cover an empty soup can to serve as a pencil holder. Mother always managed to bring home at least one outdated sample book from the paint store every year and we chose our favorite colors and designs for various craft projects.
