Women of Troy named to MVC All-Division soccer teams

West’s Rosenthal named Coach of the Year

IOWA CITY– West High’s David Rosenthal was named the Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC)’s 2015 Valley Division Coach of the Year. Rosenthal led the Women of Troy to a state championship this season, the second for West since 2004, and the 14th overall state tournament appearance for the squad with a 19-2 record overall.
West High’s Regan Steigleder, a sophomore, was picked as the Division’s Athlete of the Year. Steigleder scored 24 goals for the Women of Troy and had nine assists. Cedar Falls’ Alexa Rabune was named the Keeper of the Year.

West Trojans soccer players selected for MVC honors

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) released its list of 2015 Boys’ Soccer All-Division Selections on Wednesday, June 10.
Iowa City West High’s William Reinhardt, Nicholas Andersen and Antonio Sanchez were Valley Division First-Team picks.
Reinhardt, a junior defender, played in 17 games and scored two goals. Andersen, a senior defender/middle, played in 17 games, scored two goals and made one assist for West. Sanchez, a junior middle/forward, appeared in 14 games and scored five goals for the Trojans.

IGCA releases All-State and All-District lists

DES MOINES– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Iowa City West High girls varsity soccer players were recognized recently by the Iowa Girls’ Athletic Coaches Association’s 2015 All-State and All-District teams.
West High’s Emma Cooper, Payton Pottratz and Reagan Steigleder earned First Team All-State spots, joining athletes from Dubuque Hempstead, the Des Moines area, Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Kennedy. West Des Moines Dowling’s John Pearson was named the Class 3A State Coach of the Year.

CCA baseball splits with Western Dubuque

12-8 loss leads to 3-2 win at home

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers moved to 9-8 overall after splitting a varsity doubleheader on Thursday, June 18, at home. The Clipper boys dropped the opener in a 12-8 shootout with the Bobcats of Western Dubuque, but rallied back to a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

WILLIAMSBURG– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers ran into trouble on the road Tuesday, June 16, as the Williamsburg Raiders took both ends of a varsity doubleheader in Williamsburg. The Raiders won the opener, 6-3, and held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
An RBI double by Robby Swails brought in Logan Viktora to score for CCA in the top of the first inning in game one, but the 1-0 lead was short-lived as Williamsburg found two unearned runs in the bottom of the second and added two more runs in the third.

Clippers snap Mustang streak

Softball squad splits with ranked teams at Ft. Dodge tourney

MOUNT VERNON– The Mount Vernon Mustangs carried a 12-game winning streak into a softball doubleheader with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers June 17 in Mount Vernon.
The streak ended.
Claire Navara’s run in the top of the fifth inning held up, and Lexi Kinnaird scattered five hits to give the Clippers a 1-0 win over the No. 14 (Class 3A) Mustangs.
Mount Vernon rebounded in the second game, another squeaker, 2-1.
“Mount Vernon is a strong team and it was a nice win for us,” said CCA Head Coach Barb Lynn. “It was a great night of softball.”

NLFD answering the call

This is the first installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY— As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) had responded to 333 alarms. Assistant Chief William Schmooke expects plenty more.
“We’re going to push over 1,000 calls this year,” he said, up from 983 last year.

Thanksgiving in July food drive, Turkey Trot 10k/5k/1 mile event to be July 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will host its third annual Thanksgiving in July and Turkey Trot 10k/5k Races/Family 1 Mile Event on Saturday, July 11, at 8 a.m., in conjunction with a community wide food drive to provide food assistance to the hungry. The chip-timed race will begin and end at Centennial Park located at 1565 St. Andrews Drive.

North Liberty residents invited to Hawkeye game Sept. 5

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Athletic Department will host North Liberty Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Iowa football team entertains Illinois State in its 2015 season opener.
Any member of the North Liberty community can purchase an unlimited number of $40 group rate adult tickets and $25 youth tickets. The single game ticket price is $55 per seat. 

Watch fireworks over Lake Macbride July 4

SOLON– The public is invited to see the fireworks over Lake Macbride on Saturday, July 4, with the show beginning at dusk. Rain date is July 5.
Public support for the event is greatly appreciated. Donations may be sent to Mark Ramsey at 1598 Spartan Ct. NE, Solon, IA 52333. Checks should be made payable to Fireworks Fund. This is a Cottage Reserve-sponsored night. The Solon Beef Days Committee has provided assistance with expenses.
