Garner Elementary girls run toward success

NL school holds 2015 Girls on the Run program

NORTH LIBERTY– For girls who participate in the after-school program Girls on the Run, running is more than just a way to encourage healthy habits.
It’s a way to encourage a healthy sense of self-worth.
Esther Baker, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Eastern Iowa, has seen girls blossom through participating in the organization.
She recalled one student who came into the program with extremely low self-confidence. When given a compliment, she would respond self-deprecatingly and had difficulty interacting with the other girls and her coaches.

Six Clippers on WaMaC All-Conference softball teams

TIFFIN– The WaMaC high school athletic conference released its 2015 All-Conference softball teams Wednesday, July 15, with six Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers earning berths.
Benton Community’s Eric Stenberg earned the West Division Coach of the Year honors and his Bobcats won the conference with an 18-0 WaMaC showing and a 37-3 record overall. Center Point-Urbana was second in the final regular season standings at 13-5 and 26-13, with the Clippers third at 12-6 and 21-16.

Trojans pick off Prairie and head for state

5-2 win sends West to Des Moines for second year in a row

CEDAR RAPIDS– West High’s Trojans, ranked eighth in the state in Class 4A, knocked off fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in a substate final game Wednesday, July 22, for the right to compete in the state baseball championships.
West took the 5-2 win at Prairie in front of a capacity crowd for its second consecutive state tournament campaign.

NL dancers honored in competition

NORTH LIBERTY– Three dancers at Nicole Rock’s School of Dance, in North Liberty, were selected by the Talent On Parade competition group to attend the Talent on Parade National Dance Competition in St. Louis. They learned a jazz routine with a select group of students who were picked from across the country to perform at the national competition. The girls each also performed their solo routines and received high gold ratings.

NLYBS Fall Fun Ball emphasizes skills, partners with Diamond Dreams baseball, softball Academy

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fifth year in a row, North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) will be providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for boys and girls ages 6-13.
The season will consist of five sessions, on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Aug. 31, skipping Sept. 7, and ending Oct. 5. Rain make-up will be Oct. 12.
The sessions will focus on skill development for half of the time and half will be spent scrimmaging.

NL’s Eyestone to run for Iowa City school board

NORTH LIBERTY– Shawn Eyestone of North Liberty has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Education.
There are five open seats on the board to fill this fall. “I believe strongly that every student in our district deserves to have their specific needs addressed to the best of our ability,” Eyestone said. “Whether they are performing below grade level, above grade level, or have any other special needs, the students are the reason I am entering the race.”

NL Recreation Center to have short, long-term closures in different areas

NORTH LIBERTY– Due to the Just Tri youth triathlon, the swimming pool at the North Liberty Recreation Center will be closed to the public on Sunday, Aug. 2, until 11 a.m.
Organizers are still seeking additional volunteers to help with the event from 7:30-10 a.m. that morning. If interested, contact pool director Katie Gerot at 319-626-5716.
