Solon Optimist Beef Days Fishing Derby Saturday, July 18

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will host its annual Beef Days Fishing Derby Saturday, July 18, at 12 p.m. (30 minutes after the parade) at Brosh’s pond, at Main and Cedar Streets in Solon. Contest is catch and release, open to ages 8 to 12, and limited to 40 children. To pre-register, call Joan at 624-3458. Bring your own pole. Bait will be provided and prizes awarded. Spectators are welcome.

Clipper boys split with Beckman

DYERSVILLE– Cappy’s Crew hit a rough patch on the road Wednesday, July 1, in Dyersville as they faced the Beckman Blazers in a varsity doubleheader. The Blazers took the opener, 4-3, despite a three-RBI effort from Tanner Bandy.
The Clippers regrouped and took the nightcap with a 1-0 shutout thrown by Kobey Schlotman.
Beckman scored first in the opener, putting a run across in the bottom of the first inning.

Women of Troy go 3-1 in home tourney

West wins over Oskaloosa, Mt. Pleasant, and pounds Lisbon

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy spent part of their Independence Day weekend hosting their annual Rick Doran Classic softball tournament and posted a 3-1 record.
Waukee and North Scott finished the two-day tournament at 4-0 while West, West Des Moines Valley, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Pleasant Valley went 3-1. Oskaloosa, Muscatine, Cedar Rapids Xavier and West Liberty ended up at 2-2 while Davenport North, Charles City, Waterloo East and Mount Pleasant had 1-3 outings. Davenport West, Benton Community and Lisbon were all winless at 0-2, 0-2 and 0-4 respectively.

Clipper girls go 2-4 as regular season ends

CCA splits with CPU, falls to Hempstead, knocks off West Burlington to finish at 21-16

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity softball team ended the regular season with a 21-16 record in the wake of a pair of wins and a pair of losses.
The Creek Girls split with Center Point-Urbana at home on Thursday, July 2, before an appearances against Dubuque Hempstead and West Burlington in the Mid-Prairie Tournament Friday, July 3.

CCA falls 10-7 but answers with 8-1 win in nightcap

TIFFIN– Brent Henry and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers kicked off the Fourth of July weekend with a varsity doubleheader on Friday, July 3, against the Maquoketa Cardinals in Tiffin. While the redbirds took the opener 10-7 thanks to a seventh-inning four-run rally, the Clippers retaliated and took the nightcap 8-1 powered by Nile Rourke throwing 10 strikeouts.

CR Jefferson tests West, pulls off doubleheader upset

IC West falls 7-4, 8-4 to J-Hawks

CEDAR RAPIDS– As he was watching the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks warming up, West High coach Justin Lutjen said the doubleheader would be a good test for his Women of Troy.
Not only did the J-Hawks test West, the blue birds got the better of them with an upset sweep of the No. 1 (according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s June 26 rankings) team in Class 5A. Jefferson was the No. 5 ranked team.
In doing so, Jefferson also handed West its first MVC losses of the season, and the team’s third loss in a row following a Saturday, June 27, non-conference loss to Solon.

Creek girls take two from Indee

CCA beats Independence 5-1... twice

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls softball team improved to 18-13 on the season with a doubleheader win against the Independence Mustangs at home Monday, June 29.
The Clippers took both games 5-1.
Indee’s run in the opener came in the top of the first inning as a runner galloped across the plate.
It was all CCA after that with Claire Navara belting out a two-out, two-RBI hit with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacquelyn Fairholm followed with her own two-RBI single for a quick 4-1 lead.

Grass-fed beef genetics field day July 13

OXFORD– Getting started raising grass-fed beef may seem difficult, but experienced livestock producer Doug Darrow says the hardest part isn’t learning the logistics.
“The hardest thing is changing your thought process, letting nature be nature, and thinking about how you can manage that instead,” said Darrow, who raises grass-fed beef at Rapid Creek Ranch near Oxford.
Learn about the ongoing work Darrow and his son, Justin Wade, are doing to strengthen their grass-based beef business at a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day they are hosting on Monday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
