Volunteer to help restore Lake Macbride stone steps July 29

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park will host a volunteer event on Wednesday, July 29, from 5-9 p.m. The project will involve repairing and clearing brush from the stone steps that lead to the Lake Macbride dam. Those interested in donating their time should meet at the Lake Macbride Fisheries parking lot at 5 p.m. Participants should bring work clothes, gloves and insect repellant. For more information on volunteering, contact AmeriCorps interpretive naturalist Nate Steele at the Lake Macbride Park Office, 319-624-2200.

CCA takes two from S. Tama

Clippers nudge back above .500

TAMA– Cappy smiled.
Cappy, the unofficial mascot of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball program, and coach Brent Henry had reason to be happy after the Clippers took a pair of WaMaC wins from the South Tama Trojans Friday, July 10. The 2-1 and 4-2 victories boosted the Clippers back above the .500 mark at 19-18 overall.

ELDRIDGE– Happiness turned to heartbreak for Barb Lynn and her Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at the hands of the North Scott Lancers in Eldridge Saturday, July 11.
The Clippers and Lancers squared off in a Class 4A Region 5 Softball semifinal with the 12th-ranked North Scott squad winning 2-0 over the un-ranked Clippers.
The loss ended the CCA season at 22-17 overall while the 27-11 Lancers advanced to a Tuesday, July 14, regional final in Oskaloosa against Fairfield.

Iowa City West clinches second game against City

Trojans defeat the Little Hawks, 2-1, in game two of doubleheader

IOWA CITY- The Iowa City West High Trojans won both games during their doubleheader against City High of Iowa City last week. The first game was a back-and-forth battle ending 8-7 in nine innings on Monday, July 6, at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
With the first game being so close, the rival teams knew the second game could go either way.
West Coach Charlie Stumpff was aware of this too, and made sure his players were prepared for anything.

West girls secure MVC Conference title

Women of Troy win in doubleheader against Linn-Mar, but fall to Ankeny, 3-1

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High softball team honored seniors Laynie Whitehead, Madi Miller and Grace Tafolla with two important wins over Linn-Mar in a home doubleheader on Thursday, July 9. Their success allowed them to take the MVC Conference title and improve their record to 33-5.
Game one of the doubleheader had its first score at the bottom of the fourth inning When Taleah Smith was on third and Adara Opiola was up to bat. Opiola hit a drive to centerfield to allow Smith to run home. Tafolla would soon score a run as well, to give West a 2-0 lead.

Deadline extended for census jobs in N. Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– In the near future, the U.S. Census Bureau will conduct a Special Census in North Liberty. The City of North Liberty has requested it and will incur the cost. Local residents are needed to work as enumerators. Enumerators visit households and collect a facts about each member such as name, age, and relationship to the householder. Enumerators are paid $13.55 per hour, plus mileage and paid training.

CCA is finalist for America’s Farmers grant

ST. LOUIS, Mo.– In the Johnson County area, Clear Creek Amana Community School District has been announced as a finalist in this year’s America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Clear Creek Amana Community School District is among the top districts in Iowa in the running for grants of $10,000 and $25,000.

We Run Glow Run 5K Race, Family 1K event  to be Sept. 5; proceeds benefit Steele Basler family

NORTH LIBERTY– We Run, North Liberty’s running shoe specialty store, will host a Glow Run 5K race and Family 1K event on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 9 p.m. at Performance Health Fitness, 3290 Ridgeway Dr., Coralville.
The registration fee covers entry into the chip-timed 5K race, technical race-day shirt and finishing medal for the first 600 registrants, along with entry into a drawing for door prizes.
The 1K race is not timed.

Tiffin’s Grace United Methodist Church to hold ice cream event

TIFFIN– Grace United Methodist Church, 300 W. Marengo Rd. in Tiffin, is giving away free ice cream on Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m., so people can “Get the Scoop” about the church’s new campaign to promote children’s literacy. The campaign, called Change a Child’s Story, is part of a state-wide initiative by the United Methodist Church of Iowa to assist local schools in raising the reading levels for children, particularly those living in poverty.
