call the dive team

Trained volunteers provide unique service to county, area

IOWA CITY— Johnson County citizens have a variety of public safety agencies on duty around the clock to protect them, ranging from traditional fire departments and law enforcement agencies to the county’s ambulance service. Specialty units such as the Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team, the Sheriff’s SWAT team, County Rescue 52 and the bomb squad supplement these organizations.
But one such unit operates literally in the murky shadows most of us never see.

What’s burning?

City of Tiffin hopes to stamp out illegal dumping at municpal yard waste burn site

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin wants to continue providing a convenience to residents, but frequent abuses of the service warranted changes.
The Tiffin City Council approved revisions to an ordinance defining how residents use the city-provided “burn pile,” an area where yard waste can be dumped for safe burning later.

Oh, Yeah!

North Liberty’s ninth annual Blues & BBQ festival finally caught a break from Mother Nature, and the rain stopped nearly as soon as the free event opened on Saturday, July 11, at Centennial Park in North Liberty. The rest of the day was hot and smokin’, with plenty of saucy barbecue, cool blues music, ice-cold craft beer and fun kids’ activities to meet everyone’s summer to-do list. Above, Kevin “B.F.” Burt, , accompanied by Big Medicine, offers up his usual great performance on the big stage. See more photos and information on Blues & BBQ in upcoming editions of the Leader.

Solon hosts Marion in regional semifinal Friday

Spartans sweep doubleheaders from W. Dubuque and Maquoketa

SOLON– Solon baseball coach Keith McSweeney is hoping some home cooking will help move the Spartans through the first round of the Class 3A baseball playoffs Friday.
“I believe we are playing our best baseball right now, but we’re really banged up,” McSweeney said. “We’ve had guys step up to fill the void left by injuries, and we will need those key contributions if we hope to advance against a good Marion team this Friday.”
The Spartans host Marion in a Class 3A semifinal beginning at 7 p.m. Solon also hosts the regional final Monday, July 20, at 7 p.m.

Return to State for Solon

No. 1 Lady Spartans defeat Williamsburg, Mid-Prairie and PCM on way to date at state

SOLON– It’s back to Fort Dodge for the Solon varsity softball team.
The Lady Spartans advanced to the state softball tournament Monday evening with a 5-1 win over unranked PCM (Prairie City-Monroe) in Grinnell.
A year ago, the Lady Spartans fell one game shy in the Class 4A tournament, losing 5-0 in the title game to Dallas Center Grimes.
This year, Solon heads to the Harlan & Hazel Rogers Sports Complex north of Fort Dodge to compete in the Class 3A bracket.

Sandhill cranes spotted near Solon

SOLON– Seeing is believing.
Add Johnson County to the areas in Iowa with uncommon reports of sandhill crane reproduction. An adult pair has seen regularly on a wetland near Solon. A couple times this spring and summer, drivers braked to avoid windshield roadkill and allow the lean, reddish brown bird the right of way across the two-lane highway.
About that time, passersby witnessed a ‘courtship dance,’ indicating these 4-foot tall birds were intent on sticking around. Now, a darker brown colt, feeding with them, seals the deal.

SHUEYVILLE– The City of Shueyville is in the process of updating its comprehensive plan to develop a guide for future growth and development. Others’ opinions are an important part of updating this plan. There is a town meeting scheduled on Tuesday, July 28, at 7 p.m. in the Shueyville City Council Chamber to discuss ideas for the future. The barber is back!

Connie Semotan returns to Shueyville after 10 years

SHUEYVILLE– When Connie Semotan reopened her Shueyville barber shop in March, a lot of her clients were walk-ins, and many would tell her stories about a great gal that used to cut hair at that very same location years ago.
When she heard these stories, Semotan would smile and laugh as her customers would slowly realize that that same great gal was standing right in front of them.
“I get all kinds of people who just come in and ask, ‘are you my Connie?’” Semotan said. “The response has just been so fun.”

Site near SRNA will be home to 400,000 gallons of water
