IGCA announces 2015 All-District Softball Teams

WEST DES MOINES– The Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) announced its picks for the 2015 Al-District Softball teams on Friday, July 17.
Iowa City West High coach Justin Lutjen, in his second year with the Women of Troy, was named the Class 5A East District Coach of the Year after leading the squad to a 34-6 finish on the season.
West High also placed three athletes: Jessie Harder, Adara Opiola and Grace Tafolla on the 5A East squad.

TIFFIN– The WaMaC high school athletic conference released its 2015 All-Conference softball teams Wednesday, July 15, with six Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers earning berths.
Benton Community’s Eric Stenberg earned the West Division Coach of the Year honors and his Bobcats won the conference with an 18-0 WaMaC showing and a 37-3 record overall. Center Point-Urbana was second in the final regular season standings at 13-5 and 26-13, with the Clippers third at 12-6 and 21-16.

West defeats Des Moines East, 11-3, in the first round, moves on to state semifinal

DES MOINES- The Trojan baseball team made its first mark at Principal Park this year with an 11-3 win over the Des Moines East Scarlets, in the first round of the state tournament July 29. But the seemingly easy victory wasn’t all smooth sailing.
The Scarlets started the game with an early lead, scoring two points at the top of the first inning and another at the top of the third, giving them a 3-0 lead over West. This lead didn’t last long; by the end of the fourth inning the Trojans had stolen the momentum.

Rams deny Trojans, and West High falls 6-2 to Southeast Polk in state championship bid

DES MOINES– For the second year in a row, the Iowa City West High Trojans faced the Rams of Southeast Polk in the Class 4A State Championship baseball game, and for the second year in a row, the Rams walked away with the championship trophy.
West fell 6-2 to the Rams in the Class 4A Championship game on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Principal Park in Des Moines. It was the ninth state appearance for the team and the fourth state runner-up title. The Trojans finished second in 2009, 2010 and 2014; the closest the program has come to a championship.

NLYBS seeking donations for Penn Meadows Park improvements

NORTH LIBERTY– For 23 years, North Liberty children have been learning good sportsmanship, respect for authority and teamwork while having fun playing ball at Penn Meadows Park. This spring, 924 kids had the opportunity to continue this North Liberty tradition. However, the facilities at the park are in need of a long overdue update and expansion.
Plans for the new facility include two seven-stall restrooms, an expanded built-in concession stand and a covered picnic area. The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) still needs to raise 60 percent of the funds.

Country concert to kick off Friday Night Lights for CCA football

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Football organizing committee is excited to announce that country singer Jake McVey will perform at the CCA High School Athletic Stadium– the first concert to be held in the stadium– on Friday, Aug 7, as part of the Kick-off to Friday Night Lights event.
McVey said performing for fans all across the country is the fulfillment of a dream he has been preparing for most of his life. “My mom played piano and my dad was a drummer, so music was always going around the house,” said McVey, who grew up working on his parents’ Iowa farm.

New candidates emerge in IC school board race

One week after Baruah resigns, list of candidates is finalized

IOWA CITY – The ballot is complete for the upcoming school board election on Sept. 8.
Voters in the Iowa City Community School District will elect five new members to the district’s Board of Directors.
The fifth open seat was revealed on July 22, when Director Tuyet Baruah announced her resignation from the board in a YouTube video. She was serving her second term, set to expire in 2017. With her resignation, effective in September, she will continue on the board until a new director is elected to complete her term.

Tiffin takes first swing at draft of parks plan

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin hopes all residents will find it desirable to park it.
Rob Decker, of HBK Engineering in Iowa City, presented to the Tiffin City Council a draft master plan containing recommendations for improving the city’s eight public parks at the council’s pre-meeting work session on Wednesday, July 22.

NL council votes to provide childcare funding, in short term

City may still step out of BASP at Garner

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty will work with Iowa City schools to continue before-and-after-school childcare at Garner Elementary, at least through the end of December.

Solon baseball players named all-conference

SOLON– Six members of the Solon varsity baseball team have received all-conference WaMaC honors.
The conference released its 2015 list on Thursday, July 23, with one Solon player named to the WaMaC First Team, three others named to the Second Team and two more named with Honorable Mention.
Senior Logan Linderbaum was the only starter to receive First Team honors. Linderbaum finished the season with a .413 batting average. He had 33 hits, including 11 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 23 RBI.
