Familiar faces to fill CCA school board ballot

OXFORD — Four incumbents are running for reelection to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Board of Directors in the upcoming school board election to be held Tues., Sept. 8.
Current board members Terry Davis, Matt McAreavy, Bob Broghammer and Steve Swenka are seeking reelection this cycle. Davis, of Oxford, is running for one of two At Large seats with McAreavy, also of Oxford. McAreavy was appointed to the District Two seat to fill the vacancy created when former board member Kevin Kinney was elected to the State House. The At Large seats carry four-year terms.

Fall Sports Kickoff and Football Scrimmage Aug. 21

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club and the Solon High School and Middle School Activities Department will be hosting the annual Fall Sports Kickoff and Football Scrimmage at Spartan Stadium on Friday, Aug. 21. The events of the evening include the introduction of middle school and high school fall programs and their participants, a performance by the Solon Dance Team, and the night will culminate with a football intra-squad scrimmage.

Annual Community Polka Festival Sunday, Aug. 16, at Ely Legion

ELY– The Annual Community Polka Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Ely American Legion Hall, located at 1545 Main St. in Ely. This fundraiser is for St. Luke’s Child Protection Center.

Solon Booster’s Bash Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 22

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will be sponsoring the 15th annual Booster Bash Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Lake Macbride Golf Course. The event is open to anyone interested in supporting the student athletes of the Solon Community School District.

Middle School football equipment handout Aug. 19 and Aug. 30
SOLON– Eighth grade football players will receive their equipment on Wednesday, Aug. 19, starting at 4 p.m. in the middle school athletic hallway. Seventh grade football players will receive their equipment on Thursday, Aug. 30, starting at 4 p.m. in the middle school athletic hallway.

Council approves water tower paint job

SOLON– This new paint job will cost $62,500.
The members of the Solon City Council approved a bid of that amount from Central Tank Coatings, Inc. of Elgin for painting the city’s water tower.
The city received two quotes for the project, reported Public Works Director Scott Kleppe at a regular Aug. 5 council meeting. The other bid, for $76,780, came from the company with which the city had a long-standing relationship, Maguire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D., said Kleppe.

SOLON— If there’s something going on in Solon, odds are Marv Stastny is in the thick of it.
Stastny, one of two men honored this year as Solon’s Seniors of the Year, has made a career of volunteering to serve the community. A native of Ely, Stastny spent 20 years there, including two years on the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.

Lakeview first grade teacher Rosann Sandersfeld settles into retired life

SOLON– Three months after her retirement from teaching first grade at Lakeview Elementary School, Rosann Sandersfeld leafed through a book of student letters.
Printed painstakingly in pencil, the children thanked Mrs. Sandersfeld for her teaching career and urged her to enjoy retirement in the simplest of ways. Some hoped she’d be able to sleep in more and watch TV. Some, in a throwback to their first grade nutrition unit, implored their teacher to eat nuts and drink milk. All agreed, she must spend as many days as possible in pajamas.

School board candidate forum set for Aug. 19 at library

SOLON– There will be four candidates running for two seats on the Solon school board, and all are scheduled to appear at a candidate forum Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Solon Public Library.
School elections will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Incumbent Dan Coons will be seeking re-election to the Solon board, but two-term member Dean Martin will not.
Instead, three other residents have thrown their hat in the ring.
Adam Haluska, Jim Hauer and Amber Marty all filed candidate petitions that included at least 47 signatures with the district office by the July 30 deadline, as did Coons.

6-year-old drowns at Macbride

Hiawatha child was at beach with daycare field trip

SOLON– On Thursday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m., the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC) received a report of a missing child at Lake MacBride State Park and a deputy from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene.
At 2:13 p.m., the JECC received another 911 call from a group of teens who found an unresponsive child in the water at the beach. The teens removed the child from the water and immediately began performing CPR. The child was pronounced dead at the scene by a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) AirCare physician.
