Utility work delays Tiffin’s Ireland Avenue project

TIFFIN– Nobody enjoys traffic delays; sometimes least of all, those who help create them.
As is the case in Tiffin, where U.S. Highway 6 has seen construction crews since June 1, and the Ireland Avenue extension project has been an ongoing endeavor for nearly eight years now.
City officials are as eager to get to the end of the road construction as commuters.

Fall Festival set for Oct. 3

Colony Pumpkin Patch to kick off picking season Sept. 19

NORTH LIBERTY– A twisty 5-acre corn maze. Pumpkins. A climb-aboard spider web. Pumpkins. A corncob blasting cannon, and, yes, more pumpkins.
Toss in a barrel train, a bouncy house and tons of other kids’ activities, and it adds up to a day of family fun at the Colony Pumpkin Patch’s annual Fall Festival, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., in North Liberty.
But pumpkin lovers won’t have to wait until October for the fun to begin.
Colony Pumpkin Patch, located at 2780 Front St., will launch its annual pumpkin-picking season Saturday, Sept. 19, with pumpkins available through Oct. 30.

Matthew Smith and Indelible Grace concert in North Liberty on Sept. 26

NORTH LIBERTY– Matthew Smith and the band Indelible Grace will perform on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 2707 Dubuque St. NE, North Liberty. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

NORTH LIBERTY– Free English classes will be offered at the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty, 85 N. Jones Blvd. Classes meet on Mondays from 6:30- 8 p.m. beginning Sept. 28 and continuing through Dec. 7.
Child Care will be provided for students’ children ages four and under. While non-English speakers learn and practice English, the children of ELL (English Lanuguage Learner) students, preschool through grade 6, will participate in the Children’s Program that provides free homework assistance, tutoring and literacy instruction.

Join the North Liberty Fun Run/Walk Sunday, Sept. 20

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the Annual North Liberty Fun Run / Walk Sunday, Sept. 20. Everyone is invited to participate in this family-friendly 5K and $100 will be donated to the school with the highest participation.

ICCSD still drawn to magnet school concept

Task force will gather more information, community feedback

IOWA CITY– When it comes to magnet schools, officials from the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) are keeping the option on the table and asking for feedback.
At the Sept. 8 school board meeting, the ICCSD Board of Directors heard an update from the Magnet School Task Force, formed last year to explore the possibility of a magnet school in the district. Becky Furlong, the district’s Chief Academic Officer, presented the committee’s plan for seeking community feedback as a two-step process: educate and engage.

TIFFIN— Among the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, each school district must provide an annual report to the federal government, and to the public it serves, on academic performance.
Curriculum Director for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Mark Ernst presented the district’s Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) and Annual Progress Report (APR) to the school board at its regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Tiffin Elementary School.

City celebrates with a mix of old favorites, new traditions

SWISHER — Organizers of the 2015 Swisher Fun Days added several new attractions to the two-day annual festival. Fun Days, held Aug. 7-8 in the northwest Johnson County community, featured a Kids Zone with several inflatable attractions for the younger crowd and a first-ever human foosball tournament for more mature patrons.
The event, a Swisher tradition for decades, was previously sponsored primarily by American Legion Post 671. This year, volunteers from throughout the community organized the event.

Tiffin works to create affordable housing with higher-density, single family zoning

TIFFIN– Smaller lots can mean smaller price tags when it comes to purchasing new homes.
In an attempt to encourage development with more affordable housing, the Tiffin City Council has approved the first two readings of an ordinance amendment that will allow smaller lots for single family residential development.
