West opens with 63-42 win over determined Mount Vernon squad

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans opened the 2015-2016 season with a visit from the WaMaC conference’s Class 3A Mount Vernon Mustangs. One could presume a meeting of a Class 4A powerhouse would have little trouble with a smaller program, but the Mustangs showed they could run with the big school as they largely kept pace with a West High squad that wasn’t quite hitting on all cylinders.
The Trojans led 13-9 after the first period and 33-19 at the half, but the Mustangs narrowed the gap to a seven-point deficit going into the final period.
