Blake Williams returns to lead Solon wrestling

SOLON– He’s the “new, but the old” coach.
Blake Williams, who coached the Solon Spartan varsity wrestling program from 1999 to 2003, is back as the head coach, replacing T.J. Bevans. Williams returns to the Spartan wrestling room after leading the Prairie Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie for 12 years. For Williams it was a difficult, but ultimately easy, decision to make.
“It went really well (at Prairie),” said Williams. “I had everything I could ask for, at that time.”

Free Christmas meal at Our Lord’s Church Friday, Dec. 25

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will serve a free Christmas meal Friday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required, but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, located at 131 N. Market Street. Rides and deliveries are also available. Call Duane or Anna at 319-841-2243, a local call from Solon, with questions or for a reservation.

St. Bridget’s Christmas Party Dec. 6

SOLON– The annual St. Bridget’s of Nolan Settlement Christmas Party will be Sunday, Dec. 6, at St. Bridget’s Church, located at 2136 St. Bridget’s Rd. NE, beginning at 2 p.m. Entertainment will be provided and a visit from Santa is expected. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.

KC breakfast with Santa Dec. 6

SOLON– Please join the Solon Knights of Columbus for Breakfast with Santa Sunday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. until noon at St. Mary Parish Hall in Solon. Enjoy a delicious breakfast by the Knights of Columbus including omelets, biscuits and gravy, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes and pastries. Cost: 12 and older, $6; ages 5-11, $3; and 4 and under are free.
Visit with Santa (don’t forget your camera), and enjoy crafts and goodie bags.

Our Lord’s Church annual Candy Sale Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its annual Candy Sale Friday, Dec. 4, from 3-7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featured will be homemade candy as well as crafts, decorations and other gift items. The sale will be held at the church, located at 131 N. Market St, Solon.

Old Gold Diner Christmas Tree Walk at stable Saturday, Dec. 5

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will host the first-ever Christmas Tree Walk at the Palmer House Stable Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Trees from different organizations, businesses and individuals or families will be on display, with entertainment throughout the day. A free-will offering is requested, and proceeds will be shared with area non-profits, not including the Old Gold Diner.
The McAtee Trio (Sami, Lillee and James) will perform at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and the Solon United Methodist Church Bell Choir will entertain at 1 p.m.

Steve Clark pays attention to detail

USS Iowa model built with grandkids

SOLON– Steve Clark has crafted toys over the years for his grandchildren. But he made his latest toy along with them: a scale model replica of the USS Iowa battleship.
Born and raised in Mount Vernon and a 1967 graduate of Mount Vernon High School (MVHS), Clark now lives in Solon. Since 1979, he’s been teaching industrial arts at Clear Creek-Amana High School.
Clark and his four grandchildren, who live in Mount Vernon, have built the USS Iowa battleship model over the past two years.

New look for Solon Legion

New windows, flooring caps year of big improvements

SOLON– Ask and ye shall receive.
It was time for some updates at the Solon American Legion, and thanks to an outpouring of support from a variety of sources, Stinocher Post 460 underwent a facelift in 2015.
“If you haven’t been in this Legion in the last two or three months, you’re in for a big surprise,” said Legion Finance Officer Curt Phillips. “There’ve been an awful lot of improvements done here within the last year.”

Paula Annette Sufficool

Paula Sufficool, North Liberty, passed away on Nov. 28, 2015, after a short battle with gastric adenocarcinoma. She was born in Cedar Rapids on March 9, 1948, to James and Doris (Williams) Sufficool. She was a graduate of Bellevue High School and Iowa State University.
Paula was a Histotechnologist at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, retiring in 2010. She was a member of Iowa Society of Histotechnology, National Society for Histotechnology and Pilgrim Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution.
