Wood represents West at State Bowling

Trojans 4th at Regional Tournament

DES MOINES– West High’s Patrick Wood was the sole Trojan bowler at the State Tournament held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines. Wood was second in Class 3A Regional competition Tuesday, Feb. 16, with a total score of 453. He was tied for eighth place in Class 3A, out of a field where the district winner advances along with the next five at-large bowlers.
Overall, the West High Trojans were fourth with a total score of 2,613 behind Southeast Polk (3,231), Des Moines Lincoln (2,749) and West Des Moines Dowling (2,644).

Six Trojans named to All-Division squads

IOWA CITY– Six West High wrestlers were named to the 2015-2016 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) All-Division wrestling squads. The list was released on Monday, Feb. 15, ahead of the State Individual Wrestling Tournament.
West High senior Donovan Doyle was named the Valley Division’s Athlete of the Year with a 48-1 record at 195 pounds while Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Matt Orton, Dick Briggs and their staff picked up Coach of the Year honors.
First Team picks from West were Nelson Brands and Doyle. Brands, a sophomore, compiled a 47-3 record.

Victory just out of reach for CCA Clipper girls

End season with 44-35 loss

TIFFIN– Coach P.J. Sweeney was baffled. He’d watched every bit of video he could find on the Clinton River Queens and scouted them. He thought he’d cooked up a plan to get the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers through their Class 4A quarterfinal round game against the Clinton River Queens.
But after 32 minutes of basketball and a 44-35 loss, Sweeney and company were performing an autopsy to determine what had gone wrong.

Women of Troy pull off a 3-peat

West downs Jefferson, 61-51

IOWA CITY– For the third time this season the West High Women of Troy defeated the J-Hawks of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The third win came Saturday, Feb. 20, at home in a Class 5A regional semifinal matchup as West prevailed, 61-51, to advance to the regional final Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Waukee.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Xavier Catholic High School in northeast Cedar Rapids was the sight of an exorcism Monday, Feb. 22, as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys bedeviled the Demons of Washington, 75-71, in a Class 3A District 9 basketball semifinal.

NL Optimists to host pancake breakfast March 5

NORTH LIBERTY– The Optimist Club of North Liberty will host its 43rd annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the North Liberty Community Center gymnasium, 520 W. Cherry St.
Proceeds will benefit more than a dozen North Liberty youth programs, as all Optimist clubs have a mission to be “friends of youth.”

Penn school will host Science Night Feb. 26

NORTH LIBERTY– Penn Elementary will be hosting a fun-filled evening of exciting science Friday, Feb. 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Spill reaches Coralville Reservoir after Monday accident

SWISHER– Liquid runway deicer and diesel fuel spilled after a semi-truck owned by Cryotech Deicing Technology rolled over Monday, Feb. 15, along Interstate 380 about 14 miles south of Cedar Rapids.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) assisted with recovery and cleanup of the deicer and diesel fuel that escaped from the semi and flowed into McAllister Creek. About 3,600 gallons of liquid runway deicer and an estimated 50 gallons of diesel fuel flowed downstream about four miles to the Coralville Reservoir.

Pantry director DuBois to step down in May

NORTH LIBERTY– Tina DuBois, executive director of the North Liberty Community Pantry, will be leaving the organization at the end of May.
“We’re thankful for Tina’s leadership and service,” said Sean Pearl, chair of the pantry’s board of directors. “Tina has helped build this exemplary organization and will be leaving us in a strong and stable position to continue fulfilling our mission to feed and clothe our neighbors in need. We’ll miss her contributions, and we wish her well.”

Elementary school will start earlier

ICCSD sets bell schedule for upcoming year

IOWA CITY– Bells will ring at 7:55 a.m. for elementary school children next year, and 8:50 a.m. for secondary school. The change was made by a unanimous vote by the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors on Feb. 9.
Currently, elementary schools run 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., with junior high and high schools running from 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.
