Hawkeyes have solid football class

Hawk Talk

The early signing day for football was last Wednesday, Dec. 20.
That is the earliest high school seniors could sign a letter of intent.
It’s a little early to see if this is good for the Hawkeyes. Iowa picked up some solid recruits that could help right away.
This season the Hawks had three freshmen in the two-deeps on offense and three on defense.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette is listed as a starter at wide receiver on offense for the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
That will be Ihmir’s fourth start of the season.

Hawkeye men’s basketball

Hawk Talk

The Iowa men played two games last week.
They cruised to a 92-64 win over Southern Utah last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Once again, the Hawks used the size and depth to take down the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah is a little bit like Drake as they rely on the 3-pointer. When they are hot, they are tough to defend, but the Hawks held the Thunderbirds to 8-26 from 3-point range (30.8 percent), controlled the boards (48-29) and points in the paint (52-24).

State champs

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women beat Drake, 79-66, last Thursday at Carver, making them the mythical state champs with wins over Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa.
What a difference a year makes.
Last season, the Drake Bulldogs went 29-5, 18-0 in the conference. They beat the Hawkeyes 81-76 in Des Moines. Iowa had two players in double-figures, led by Ally Disterhoft with 24, and Megan Gustafson with 20.
The Hawks only made 3-11 from 3-point range. Drake had four players in double figures and finished 8-19 from behind the arc.
