Volleyball honors accrue for area players

IGCA announces All-District and All-State

JOHNSON COUNTY– Athletes from Clear Creek Amana (CCA), Iowa City West High and Liberty High School were honored as the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) announced its 2017 All-District and All-State Teams for high school volleyball.
CCA junior Shauntina Williams earned both Class 4A Southeast All-District and Class 4A All-State Honorable Mention distinctions. Williams produced 353 kills for the Clippers, made 23 ace serves, three assists, 45 block assists, 13 solo blocks and 103 digs.

IC West upends Dav. Assumption, 60-48

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy opened the 2017-18 varsity girls basketball season with a 60-48 win over Davenport Assumption Saturday, Nov. 25, as part of Rivalry Saturday in Coe College’s new arena.
The Knights stunned West with a 12-4 lead at the end of the first period. The Women of Troy quickly dug out of the hole with a 21-point barrage in the second period while holding Assumption to only three points for a 25-15 halftime advantage. West led 43-28 after three periods of play.

Dubuque Senior sweeps IC West

DUBUQUE– The Dubuque Senior High Rams defended their home bowling lanes Tuesday, Nov. 21, against Iowa City West High at Cherry Lanes (Diamond Jo Casino), in Dubuque, to open the 2017-2018 season.
Senior’s varsity girls defeated the West High Women of Troy, 2,474 to 2,145, the Senior junior varsity (JV) girls won, 2,038 to 1,465, Dubuque’s varsity boys prevailed, 2,888 to 2,640, over the Trojans and the Senior JV boys won, 2,447 to 1,730, for the sweep.

ANAMOSA– The 2017-18 varsity girls basketball season opened on a sour note for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers as they fell, 53-28, to the Anamosa Blue Raiders Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Anamosa.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The 2017-18 varsity boys basketball season opened for Liberty High and Iowa City West High with scrimmages in Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jamboree on Monday, Nov. 20.

Applications for city FY19 social service funding now available

NORTH LIBERTY– Each year, the City of North Liberty funds a number of organizations which offer social services to North Liberty residents. As part of its annual budget planning, the City of North Liberty has asked organizations seeking funding for services in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018, to submit an application by Dec. 1, for consideration. These funds are for both annual funding and smaller projects and contributions to innovative programs.

NL documentarian opens video and photography company

NORTH LIBERTY– Richard Redfern takes media to new heights in North Liberty with a new business, Flyover Productions, a drone videography and photography start up.
A native of Iowa City, Redfern grew up with a desire to join the media industry.
“I got into photography at a pretty young age,” Redfern recalled. “I knew that whether it was film or it was television, I wanted to be involved with that.”

“A Christmas Carol,” performed Dec. 1

North Liberty Community Library

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., the North Liberty Community Library will present “A Christmas Carol,” by Charles Dickens, performed by Ben Carling. Mr. Carling will perform from the original script Dickens used for a public reading in Boston in 1867. This one-man performance will bring multiple characters from the beloved classic to life.
