Surviving the Holidays grief support

seminar Tuesday, Dec. 5

SOLON– Sign up for “Surviving the Holidays,” a grief support seminar, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 12:15 p.m. Reservations are not necessary to attend but would be helpful so there will be enough printed materials to hand out. Let us know you would like to attend the seminar by calling 319-624-2251. Pastor Scott Keele Kober, from the Solon United Methodist Church, will be leading the program. For a reservation for the program and an Old Gold Diner meal, call 319-624-2251 by 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4.

Roundabout substantially complete

IOWA CITY– The roundabout at the intersection of W6E (Ely Road NE) and F16 (Highway 382 NE) has been substantially completed. Ely Road, North of Highway 382, was open to traffic on Nov. 22. The contractor will continue to work on remaining project requirements until the spring of 2018, so watch for temporary traffic control changes in and around the intersection as things are touched up.

Finding lost water

New meters will allow city to track its own use

SOLON– How many water meters are there in the City of Solon?
Care to guess?
Public Works Director Scott Kleppe estimated somewhere around 1,200, but we’ll find out for sure pretty soon.
That’s because the city is looking to replace all of them next year in an attempt to further improve the efficiency of the municipal water system.
City council members discussed the pending project at an Oct. 4 meeting, and expect to follow up with action in the next month or two.

Jackson earns Jack Tatum Award

Hawk Talk

IOWA CITY– University of Iowa junior defensive back Josh Jackson has been named the recipient of the 2017 Jack Tatum Award as the best defensive back in the nation. The award was announced Tuesday by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, and is named for the late Ohio State and NFL legend Jack Tatum.

“The Hawks blow up Nebraska”

The headline comes from the words that Gary Dolphin, Iowa’s play-by-play radio announcer, said as time ran out Black Friday in Lincoln.
The Iowa Hawkeyes blew the Huskers out in the second half, breaking a 14-14 halftime tie and scoring 42 unanswered points.
I have been to Lincoln once to see Iowa play Nebraska.
The year was 1980 and one of my homeboys from Moville, Kim Clark, was working in Lincoln and I went over for the weekend to go to the game with him.
The final score… 57-0!

Iowa’s shotgun deer season gets underway Dec. 2

DES MOINES– The first of Iowa’s popular shotgun deer seasons is Dec. 2 to 6 when an expected 60,000 orange clad hunters head to the timber. That group will be followed by another 60,000 hunters who prefer the Dec. 9 to 17 second shotgun season.
Each contingent will also pack along thousands of antlerless tags, to extend their time in the field.
Fans of cold weather purchase about 40,000 tags for the Dec. 18 to Jan. 10 late muzzleloader season.

Thomas J. Stackhouse 86, of Swisher, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at his home. Funeral Mass was held Monday, Nov. 27, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon with Rev. Tim Sheedy officiating. Burial with military rites was Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

More questions than answers on proposed water project

I am a Solon resident, tax payer and voter. I’m asking why the Council is in a hurry to vote on this Gallery Acres West (GAW) project. We don’t even know the exact proposal, let alone the costs. I feel Council is irresponsible towards us. I’m afraid this is about money and development. We have a right to all information– legal opinions, cost/benefit studies– that Council has. If this information doesn’t exist, please tell us that, and WHY it doesn’t exist. I understand we paid $7,000 recently for a consultant to look at parking downtown.

Tell me, is it ignorance?

Lately I’ve been putting together some booklets of poems, I have been writing and sending them to some of my friends and relatives. I’ve done this before, but on a smaller scale. Mostly, these have been just a few poems about a specific topic and I gave them only to people who had shown a particular interest in them. But these more recent ones add up to an even three dozen and represent my favorites from the many new poems I’ve written since joining The Poetry Gang over four years ago.
