Their aim is true

Spartan team takes 2nd at home tournament, 1st at Hawkeye Downs

Solon Economist
SOLON– Their aim is true.
The Solon Spartan Archery team hosted its second annual tournament Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Solon High School gymnasium, finishing a strong second place and missing first place by only 12 points. Several individual archers were awarded medals in different divisions.

City mulls impact of TIF rebate for Main Street project

HPR applies for $350,00 to help build “121 on Main”

SOLON– They didn’t say yes, but they didn’t say no.
At a regular meeting Feb. 1, members of the Solon City Council directed City Administrator Cami Rasmussen to project the impact of between $125,000 and $200,000 in Tax Increment Finance (TIF) rebates over the span of five budget years for a proposed Main Street development.
The move was in response to a TIF application by HPR Investments LLC seeking $350,000, or 10 percent of the $3.5 million project cost, in assistance for “121 on Main,” a mixed-use two-story building slated to replace three Main Street residences.

J.L. Palmer CPA:

A professional with your security in mind

NORTH LIBERTY– It can happen to anyone– even the experts.
After 20-plus years of experience as a certified professional accountant (CPA), Jennifer L. Palmer wasn’t too shocked when she became a victim of tax return identity theft.
“The bad guys are getting more sophisticated and smarter,” she said. “It’s very lucrative and very organized crime.”
Palmer– who has served the North Liberty community since 1995– said while there’s not much one can do to avoid falling prey to these criminals, there are some precautionary measures to be taken.

22 new Hawkeyes

Hawk Talk

Football signing day has come and gone and the Iowa Hawkeyes filled some needs and got one of the top recruits in the nation.
Iowa needed wide receivers, defensive backs and defensive linemen.
They signed four, maybe five wide receivers; five, maybe six defensive backs and three, maybe four defensive linemen.
Did the Hawks find another Matt VandeBerg?
Matt wasn’t recruited by any DI schools. He was thought to be a gray shirt but started as a freshman. His junior year he led the team with 65 catches.
How about a Josey Jewell?

Two truths, one lie

Walkin'

Sabra and I attended the annual party for West Branch Communications, the company that publishes this newspaper as well as eight other weekly rags.
I use the word “rag” affectionately. Publisher Jake Krob has done an excellent job of keeping the editorial quality up and the bottom line black on all of his endeavors. This is not an easy task. The editions and mastheads in the archives are proof. Many people have tried and failed at threading all the needles it takes to keep a small community newspaper afloat. Few make it but Krob is one that did.

Food For Thought

My friend commented on the latest fad of taking photos of oneself with celebrities, be they politicians, sports figures, movie stars or any one else who is famous, admired or envied. As I thought about it, I began to realize that the practice is hardly new. The medium (the ubiquitous cell phone) may be relatively new, but the idea of having physical evidence that we have, at some time, had personal contact with this or that famous person is not. I think it is quite similar to the practice of collecting autographs of famous or admired people.
