CCA boys track and field

Great expectations

TIFFIN– Ben Robison has never been more excited to get a new season underway. Robison, in his 10th year of coaching and third year at the helm of Clear Creek Amana’s boys track and field program, attributes his excitement to a number of factors.
First, Gabe Bakker and Trevor Bollers have joined the coaching staff. Bakker is the head varsity football coach, while Bollers is one of his assistants.

CCA girls end regular season

A hole too deep

TIFFIN– “(We were in) too deep of a hole to recover from,” Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls basketball coach P.J. Sweeney said of a loss at home to West Branch Thursday, Feb. 8. The Bears took the non-conference game, 51-41, and ended the regular season for the Clippers at 11-10 ahead of postseason play.
“I was extremely happy with the fight,” Sweeney added. “They never gave up!”

Nine Trojans to state

Four win at 3A district tourney

MOUNT PLEASANT– Iowa City West advanced nine wrestlers to the 2018 state individual tournament in Des Moines with first- or second-place finishes in the Class 3A District 4 state qualifying tournament Saturday, Feb. 10, in Mount Pleasant.
Graham Gambrall, Nelson Brands, Ashton Stumpf and Francis Duggan won district championships at 132, 160, 170 and 220 pounds, respectively.

Liberty girls fall, 51-28

Comets outshine the Lightning

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls fell to 6-13 in their debut basketball season Tuesday, Feb. 6, with a 51-28 loss to the visiting Comets, from Bellevue.
The Comets blazed to a 16-9 lead in the first period and held a 28-13 advantage at halftime.

Trojans swimmers 13th at state

Hajek earns West’s best individual finish

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans sent eight varsity swimmers to the 2018 State Swimming Meet held Saturday, Feb. 10, in downtown Iowa City at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Izaak Hajek, Ben Berhow, Valeri Trussov, Brennon Keen, Lane Griffis, Tate Happel, Michael Kimball and Ethan McAreavy represented West in six events and propelled the Trojans to a 13th-place finish overall.
Ames won the team championship with 221 points while Valley High School of West Des Moines was the runner-up with 220. City High finished seventh with 126 team points.

CCA sends Rohret to state wrestling

Liberty’s first wrestlers fall short at district

FAIRFIELD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Andrew Rohret was the only wrestler from CCA and Liberty High to survive a Class 2A District 3 state qualifying tournament Saturday, Feb. 10, in Fairfield.
Rohret claimed the 145-pound championship with a 4-2 decision over West Liberty’s Justis Dengler in the semifinals and by pinning Centerville’s Tiger Terpstra in 4:50 in the first place match. Rohret headed to Des Moines and the state individual tournament with a 37-13 record.

NL’s Metzler bowls his 27th 300-game

CEDAR RAPIDS– Dave Metzler has a life-long passion for bowling, and his dedication to the sport, and his skill, brought him many rewards the past 45 years.

Butler named Swimming Coach of the Year

IOWA CITY– West High’s Byron Butler and his staff were named Mississippi Division Coach of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s (MVC) 2018 Boys Swimming All-Division Selections released Monday, Feb. 5. Butler took the helm of the West High girls program in 2015 and the boys program in 2016.
Linn-Mar’s Matt Peng was named the Division Swimmer of the Year.
Cedar Falls’ Jordan Wessels and staff earned Valley Division Coach of the Year honors and Sam Reinart (Cedar Falls) was the Division Athlete of the Year.

Moore’s 34 points carry CCA to win

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys improved to 8-11 with a non-conference win Thursday, Feb. 8, at home, against West Branch. The Clippers beat the Bears, 83-79, with a 34-point effort from senior Darius Moore.
The Creek Boys held a slim lead throughout the contest, winning the first period, 24-23, and holding a 38-36 halftime advantage.
Jordan Wolfe contributed 15 points, while Tyler Schrepfer had a 10-point night for the Clippers. Nick O’Connor led the squad in rebounds with seven, while Moore made five assists.
The Bears dipped to 12-9.

Norwalk takes down IC West

Warriors deny Trojans a trip to state duals

WAUKEE– Iowa City West High Trojan wrestlers were denied the opportunity to compete in the 2018 State Dual Team Tournament by the Norwalk Warriors in a Class 3A Regional Dual Meet Wednesday, Feb. 7, in Waukee. Norwalk defeated West High, 55-18. The Norwalk Warriors fell victim to the Waukee Warriors, 55-12, however, sending Waukee to the state duals.
