CCA varsity boys soccer preview

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys 2017 soccer season ended on a sunny Saturday in May as the Marion Indians won a Class 2A substate final, 1-0. The loss prevented the Creek Boys from competing in the state tournament, marking the final performance from seniors Jackson Pettinger, Nick Ritchie, Sam Evans, Pau Alberich, Oscar Espinoza, Trey Godbolt, Erick Martinez, Tony Zapata, Wyatt Sedlacek, Tyreke Williams, Seth Mass, Florian Wenland and Ian McDonald.

Liberty High varsity boys soccer preview

NORTH LIBERTY– They’re young, they’re relatively untested and they’re ready to learn. Liberty High School’s first varsity boy’s soccer team faces a challenging schedule across multiple classes and conferences in its inaugural season. Liberty officially joins the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) this fall.
Ben Watson, formerly an assistant coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson (boys) and Cedar Rapids Washington (girls), is leading the Lightning, AKA “The Bolts.”
“I am excited for the opportunity to start during the first year of a new program,” Watson said.

Creek Girls go from depth to youth

TIFFIN– A year ago Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls varsity soccer coach Matt Harding said, “We finally have depth at all positions, a luxury we haven’t had in the past.” The Clippers went 14-4 overall last season with a 10-1 WaMaC record and 6-1 showing in the WaMaC West Division. The Creek Girls were knocked out of the postseason by the Grinnell Tigers in a shocking 2-0 Class 2A regional semifinal loss.

Trap shooting gains traction

AMANA– Four years ago, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Trap Shooting Team had less than 20 members. Today, the squad has more than doubled with 49 student athletes from the middle and high school participating in the sport.
Scot Wetjen and Kassie Krug are new co-coaches at the helm of the Clippers’ program this year, with assistant coaches Dave Bietz, Shiloh Knapp, Dave Lacina, Joel Demmel, Matt Demmel, Jeff Simmons, Brady Adams, Jim Schmidt and Chris Herr. The team has two returning seniors: Garret Wetjen and Allison Pettinger.

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s motto is “A tradition of excellence.” The Women of Troy Track and Field Team has not only taken it to heart, they’ve proven it time and time again with 16 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) championships, 12 regional championships and six state championships. The six state championships are the second most in Class 4A history and the fifth most in all classes.
The Women of Troy are the defending MVC and regional champions and finished runner-up team at last year’s state coed meet.

North Liberty spring cleanup coming

NORTH LIBERTY–
Muddy Creek cleanup
On Saturday, April 7, residents are encouraged to join the cleanup led by the North Liberty Tree & Storm Water Advisory Board, Boy Scout Troop 216 and Cub Scout Packs 216 and 275 to remove debris along Big Muddy Creek and the bike trail. The clean up is held annually in observance of Keep America Beautiful Day.
Join in by meeting at the North Liberty Community Center north parking lot at 9 a.m.
Curbside leaf collections
Spring leaf collection is scheduled to start Monday, April 2 and will run through Friday, April 20.

Tiffin fire annual pancake breakfast April 15

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders host their annual pancake breakfast Sunday, April 15, from 6 a.m. to noon at the fire station, 221 Main St.
Chief Brian Detert said the department expects to serve around 1,200 people. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, whole hog sausage and cinnamon rolls. There will also be jam from Clear Creek Orchard for sale. No admission fee is required, but a free will donation is accepted.

Trash and recycling revisions considered

NORTH LIBERTY– At its March 27 meeting, the North Liberty City Council looked at potential changes to our trash and recycling program. The proposal, outlined in a memo to council and included below, would offer three volume and frequency options for households to select from. This includes heavy-duty wheeled bins less susceptible to wind and appropriate for automated collection, and the convenience of having billing included with other city utilities such as recycling.

CCA Enrollment projections continue up

OXFORD – The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, the “Home of the Clippers,” continues to see enrollment growth, which has led to the construction of a fourth elementary school, additions to another, expansions of the high school and a fifth elementary to begin construction this year along with other projects across the district. A casual look around the district shows housing developments springing up like dandelions. And according to Rob Schwarz, it’s only going to continue.

NL holiday hours for March 30

NORTH LIBERTY– Some hours will be affected on Friday, March 30.
City Hall, city offices and the North Liberty Community Library will be closed. The recreation department will be open its normal hours: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
