Iowa Print Sports Writers Boys All-State Team

West High’s McCaffery and Sims make the cut

DES MOINES– The fledgling Iowa Print Sports Writers’ Association (IPSWA) released its second All-State basketball teams Tuesday, March 13, with picks for boys basketball. The new association, which takes over the All-State selections formerly made by the Iowa Newspaper Association, debuted with girls all-state picks on March 6.

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s varsity girls tennis team finished third at the state tournament last year after being crowned division co-champions and posting a 20-2 record overall.

AMES– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School was out for spring break, but that didn’t stop the girls track and field team from competing in Iowa State University’s High School Classic Indoor meet Monday, March 12, in the Lied Recreation Center in Ames.
Andrea Roller had the Clippers’ best individual finish with 14th place (12-way tie) in the high jump after clearing 4-10. CCA’s 4x400 relay team took 12th in an invitational race, while the 800-meter sprint medley relay came in 13th.

Reiland resigns

HOF wrestler coached Trojans for 19 years

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High Head Wrestling Coach Mark Reiland resigned on Monday, March 19, ending a 19-year career at West. Reiland won two state titles and was a four-time state-placer at Eagle Grove High School (1984-1987) and earned an NCAA championship in 1991 and two All-American honors while attending the University of Iowa.

Mehaffey Bridge Road trail extension

NORTH LIBERTY– Materials are being delivered and minor work has begun on the Mehaffey Bridge Road Trail Extension project. A Portland Cement Concrete trail will be installed within the right of way along F28 (Mehaffey Bridge Road) from Cedar Springs Drive to the Mehaffey Bridge Boat Ramp. Construction will include grading and installation of storm sewer, retaining walls and a culvert underpass. A project open house will be held to share more information about the trail and possible construction impacts before more significant construction operations begin.

50 years of home rule

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty joined cities from across the State of Iowa to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Home Rule Amendment to Iowa’s State Constitution by passing a proclamation stating, “Home Rule is essential to effective and responsive municipal governance in all cities in Iowa,” and that local control “continues to be vital to the health and prosperity of all cities in Iowa.”

March Good Neighbor meeting

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty may soon consider a subdivision plat for property, and the public is invited to an open house-style meeting being held to explain the proposal. The property is not within the corporate limits of North Liberty, but is within the fringe area around North Liberty in which the city provides input to Johnson County regarding county subdivisions. It is located east of Liberty High School, off Zackary Lane NE. The proposal is for a split of one large existing lot into two lots for residential purposes.

Volunteer Spotlight

NORTH LIBERTY– Rylee Johnson is a high school student who started volunteering with North Liberty Community Pantry in the summer of 2017. Despite her busy schedule with academics and activities, she continues to volunteer several times a month at the pantry. She enjoys volunteering while the pantry is open, so she can interact with shoppers, but also does off-shift activities, such as stocking shelves during evenings.

Tiffin FY 2018-2019 budget

TIFFIN– The FY 2018-2019 budget for the City of Tiffin was presented Tuesday, March 6.
The tax levy decreased slightly at $11.80. Tiffin City Adminstrator Doug Boldt pointed out, of the 107 Iowa communities between 1,500 and 4,000 population, Tiffin was ranked as having the 23rd lowest tax levy, with Denver being the lowest at $6.96 and Rockwell City the highest at $23.70.
