Celebrating independence in Oxford

Town anticipates 150th anniversary with festivities

OXFORD– It was a sunny and humid holiday in Oxford, with temperatures lingering around 90 degrees on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 4. But that didn’t stop its residents and members of surrounding communities from filling up the sidewalk along downtown Augusta Avenue for the town’s 2018 Independence Day parade.

Centennial Park’s first playground ready for Blues & BBQ festival

NORTH LIBERTY– Playground design has come a long way. Forty years ago, kids played on jungle gyms and monkey bars installed on asphalt pads or surrounded by various sizes of gravel. Later, bits and pieces of shredded tires were layered around the appliances, cushioning young bodies from the inevitable falls. More recently, other materials such as wood chips were placed to provide a softer surface.

Jazzed to play Iowa City

Liberty Jazz Combo takes to Youth Stage

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High Jazz Combo had the privilege of performing on the Youth Stage for the first time at the Iowa City Jazz Festival, Saturday, June 30. Facing temperatures in the upper 80s, the nine-student band sweated out two sets, one at 6:30 p.m. and another 8:30 p.m. Cracking jokes between songs and ending the night with a composition of their own, the group played to a sizable audience on bustling Iowa Avenue.
