NORTH LIBERTY– Alastair Heim had words of encouragement for the kids of North Liberty.
On the morning of Saturday, May 26, families kicked off their weekend with a visit from the internationally published children’s picture book author. Heim took the occasion to read his books to the young locals, share some wisdom and sign copies of his work, with Prairie Lights Books providing books for sale. The event, which began at 11 a.m., was hosted by the library in partnership with the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, free to the community.

NORTH LIBERTY– Third-graders squealed with excitement as they navigated the thick brush and rolling hills of Squire Point, evading thorn bushes and using downed trees as balancing beams. It was a cool, cloudy morning on Friday, May 11, as the students of Heritage Christian School took part in Operation G.O.O.D. (Giving Of Ourselves Day).

DES MOINES– The Solon boys track and field team found success against tough statewide competition, again.
“We were really pleased with our team performance at the state track meet. Our goal from the beginning of the year has always been to go out and compete as the best version of ourselves each time we have the opportunity. When you can do it during championship season it is very satisfying,” said Coach Mark Sovers.

DES MOINES– A top-eight finish; a couple more school records and Solon’s girls’ track team returned from the 2018 state track meet knowing they had pushed themselves to the limit.
Qualifying in 14 events, the Lady Spartans had the numbers. A down-to-the-wire second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay and school record in the fourth-place shuttle hurdle relay were final day highlights; but it took an all-in effort from everybody to rack up the 28 team points.

SOLON– Coming into its 79th annual session, American Legion Hawkeye Boys State will be held at Camp Dodge in Johnston June 10-15. Boys selected to attend from Solon this year are Lance Martin, son of Dean and Carole Martin, and Jesse Miller, son of Randy and Denise Miller. They were chosen by members of the Solon American Legion Post No. 460 to attend based on scholastic and community achievements.
