Solon American Legion Girls State

SOLON– Iowa Girls State is one of the premier programs sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and was all started by a dream of four women over 70 years ago in hopes of teaching young women about the political process. Girls State is a “learning by doing” program, which takes the girls through the entire political process.

Shueyville High Alumni Banquet

held April 27

SHUEYVILLE– The 127th annual Shueyville High School Alumni Banquet was held April 27 at the Shueyville United Methodist Church. The Shueyville Center was open to look at the alumni remembrance shelves. Darlene Suchomel and John Castek entertained with their accordion music.
This year all who attended Shueyville grade school in the old high school building were invited to attend. Next year it will be the same. Let Kathryn Birky, in the Swisher phone book know if you want to attend so we can send out an invitation.

Wurzer tries to save school district from unwanted mail

SOLON– The contents of Solon Community School District staff mailboxes should be a little slimmer next month– and that’s a good thing.
For the last few months, Solon Middle School associate Diane Wurzer has been collecting unwanted mailings sent to staff at Solon schools, contacting the companies sending these mailers, and unsubscribing from their lists.

Donate your old graduation robes

SOLON– Do you have an old graduation robe to donate? Solon High School is collecting black graduation robes for future student use. To donate one, drop it by the high school office during office hours: Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. For those with questions, call 319-624-2381.

Three injured in pickup truck accident

IOWA CITY– A 29-year-old Iowa City man has been charged after a single-vehicle accident Wednesday, May 16, on Prairie Du Chein Road in rural Iowa City.

St. Bridget’s Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 28

SOLON– The church doors open at 8 a.m. and Mass begins at 9 a.m. at St. Bridget’s Annual Memorial Day Event Monday, May 28.
Bring your lawn chair, family and friends to help celebrate Memorial Day with mass in St. Bridget’s cemetery. Services will be moved indoors if it rains.

Poppy Days in Solon, May 19-28

SOLON– Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars.
The tradition of the memorial flower honoring the war dead began after WWI when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian Colonel John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row...”

Legion Memorial Day services

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Family will be hosting Memorial Day Services at Legion Park at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 28. Transportation will be available from the Legion to the Legion Memorial. Plan on being at the Legion by 7:30 a.m. for a ride to the Legion Memorial. Refreshments at the Legion will follow the ceremony.
There will be no ceremony at the East Overlook Park by the Coralville Dam this year.
Evening service will be at the Sutliff Bridge at 9 p.m. This service is to honor those that were lost at sea.
