Liberty girls shut out Fort Madison, 3-0

Lightning improves to 4-3

FORT MADISON– The Liberty High varsity girls’ soccer team improved to 4-3 Monday, April 22, with a 3-0 shutout of the Fort Madison Bloodhounds, in a non-conference game, at the Baxter Sports Complex, in Fort Madison.
Two of the Bolts’ goals came from a pair of freshmen, Grace Heddens and Emma Wilde. Junio Briana Ervin scored, as well, while sophomore Rylie Baldes had an assist.

Solon girls win second in a row

Cardinals dispatched by Lady Spartans, 2-0

SOLON– In the Lady Spartans’ first of two home games of the week, on Tuesday, April 23, Solon dispatched the Maquoketa Cardinals, 2-0, to move to .500 on the season. The win was the second in a row for the Lady Spartans, who appear to be building momentum on offense cresting the halfway point of the season.

CCA and Liberty High results from the 2019 Drake Relays

DES MOINES- Liberty High’s Ashlyn Keeney made school history with her effort in the 3,000-meter run Thursday, April 25, at the 2019 Drake Relays in Des Moines. A freshman, Keeney won the event in 9:39.64, making her the first Liberty High student athlete to win at the Drake Relays, and also setting the fastest time for a freshman in state history. Her time is also the eighth-fastest in the United States, ever, by a freshman. Keeney was also the runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.99.

DES MOINES- So, now, they’ve run against the best in the state. Solon’s Lady Spartans track team returns to the regular season this week, before gearing up for their next tour of Drake University’s ‘Blue Oval.’ With a meet in Monticello and WaMaC conference slated this week; it is into the post-season. The regional qualifier, May 9, determines who returns to Drake Stadium, May 16-18, for the state coed track meet.

Sartain, Schmidt, Kinzer, Woody, 4x100 & sprint med win for Liberty High

ANAMOSA– The Liberty High boys track and field team won Anamosa’s coed meet Tuesday, April 23, with four individual winners and two winning relay teams. The Lightning topped the nine-team field with 139.5 team points, with Mount Vernon taking the runner-up spot with 129. The host Blue Raiders were fifth with 79.5.
Individual winners for Liberty included Ryan Sartain in the 110-meter hurdles, Dylan Schmidt in the 1,600-meter run, Drake Woody in the 400-meter hurdles and Jack Kinzer smoking the field in the 3,200-meter run.

Author Sarah Prineas drops latest title, “Dragonfell”

SOLON– Sarah Prineas created a world where cities run on magic.
Now she’s made another where dragons hoard teacups.
“Dragonfell,” her 11th book for HarperCollins, was released in hardcover in March.
It takes place in an otherworld, on the cusp of industrial revolution, with less room for magic and dragons.
Rafi Bywater, accused by a factory owner of being “dragon-touched,” is cast out of his village, and begins a journey to discover the truth, befriended along the way by Maud, a wanna-be dragon scientist.

NORTH LIBERTY– Friday, April 19, was supposed to be a day off from school for students at Clear Creek Amana’s North Bend Elementary, in North Liberty. Instead, it became a regular school day due to so many snow days this past winter.
However, the bitterness of having to go to school to kick off the Easter weekend was sweetened.
Literally.
The school held its fourth annual Dudes and Donuts breakfast the hour before the start of classes, giving the kids a sweet start to their school day.

May Day Breakfast Saturday, May 4

SOLON- Meet your friends or members of your family at the Solon United Methodist Church for the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club May Day Breakfast on Saturday, May 4, from 7 to 11 a.m. Enjoy egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk.
Adult tickets are $6 each or five tickets for $25. Children aged 5 to 12 are $3 each or five for $12. Children under the age of 5 are free.
The profit made from the breakfast will be split between the Solon Public Library and the Solon Intermediate School media center.

Solon Fire Dept.’s new EMS truck has already gotten a workout

SOLON- The Tri-Township (Solon) Fire Department’s fleet expanded recently with the addition of a new medical response truck.
Solon 139, a 2019 Ford F-350 pickup with modular service body, entered service roughly one month ago, and has already gotten a workout as EMS (Emergency Medical Services) runs make up the majority of the calls for service for the 35-member department.
“It’s been nice with the call volume,” Captain Rick Childs said, noting at least 85 percent of the all-volunteer departments calls for service are medical emergencies.

Solon volunteer fire breakfast May 26

SOLON– The Solon firefighters host the 56th Annual Solon Firefighter's Breakfast from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, at the Solon Fire Station, located at 131 N. Iowa Street.
The breakfast is all-you-can-eat and the menu includes: pancakes, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, patty sausage, sliced ham, milk, orange juice and coffee. Cost is $4 for children 12 and younger and $7 for adults.
