NL’s weeklong winter festival wraps up with winter games

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter winter festival, a weeklong effort to break people out of their wintertime hibernation, wrapped up Saturday, Feb. 1, with adult kickball and the Run the I“Bitter”Rod 1k doggie fun run/walk at Penn Meadows Park, along with several other events around North Liberty, including the Snuggie Crawl and Boy Scout Troop 216’s annual Chili Supper.

NL Council discusses capital projects and spending surplus funds

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council continued its discussion on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 budget Tuesday, Jan. 28, during a work session preceding a regular meeting. Council members looked at potential allocations using surplus general fund dollars from FY19 as well as proposed capital projects for the new fiscal year.

SMS 40-book challenge a real page-turner

SOLON– Middle school students are reading more and more.
And it’s making a difference in reaching benchmarks set by the district.
At the heart of it all is Solon Middle School’s 40-Book Challenge, an optional but highly encouraged competition over the course of the school year.
Every student is asked to read 40 novels from a wide variety of genres, and are given dedicated school time to accomplish the task.
“There’s something quite amazing going here,” said Julie Smith, middle school instructional coach.

The Golden Speedo

IOWA CITY– Rivalries between the Iowa City high schools create unique traveling trophies. Iowa City West High and Iowa City High have “The Golden Spike” for the annual varsity volleyball match. West and City have “The Boot” for football. And for West and City, the boys on the swim teams battle once a year for “The Golden Speedo.”

McPherson puts up 19 points, Ono-Fullard has 18 as Liberty falls 58-51 to Linn-Mar

MARION– Liberty High’s varsity girls dropped to 1-10 on the season Tuesday, Jan. 21, after falling 58-51 to Linn-Mar in the Lions’ den. The Lightning trailed 19-14 at the end of the first quarter, but out-scored the Lions 15-9 in the second period for a 29-28-halftime lead. Linn-Mar retook the lead in the third and held a 39-36 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

CCA wrestlers fall to Don Bosco and La Porte City-Union

GILBERTVILLE– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) wrestlers faced a pair of tough, and ranked, opponents Tuesday, Jan. 21, in a varsity double dual meet at Don Bosco Catholic High School in Gilbertville.
The Dons, No. 1 in Class 1A, shut out the Clippers, 77-0. The Creek Boys hoped to rebound in their second dual of the night, against the No. 9 in 2A Knights, but fell, 70-9.

Stratton hits 1,501 career points

CCA’s standout senior’s 20 points leads the Creek Girls to 68-27 win over Independence

INDEPENDENCE– 1,501. That’s how many points Clear Creek Amana (CCA) senior Karsyn Stratton scored, as of Friday, Jan. 24. Stratton hit the career milestone on the road at Independence where the Clippers overhauled the Mustangs, 68-27, in the team’s second meeting of the season. The Creek Girls mauled Independence, 58-17, in Tiffin, on Dec. 17.
CCA led, 30-19, at the halftime break, after trailing briefly in the first quarter. The Creek Girls were well in control in the second half, taking the third quarter, 47-21.

Bolts lick the Lions

Liberty High boys defeat Linn-Mar, 51-46

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity boys improved to 6-3 on the season with a 51-46 win over the Linn-Mar Lions Tuesday, Jan. 21, at home.
Ben Houselog, a senior, put up Liberty’s first two points: a pair of free throws, which tied the game at 2-2. Ethan O’Donnell drained a three-point bucket, and followed up with a two-point basket ahead of an Ira Hazeltine three-bomb. However, the Bolts trailed 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Budget time in NL brings public safety discussions

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s budget time for municipalities, and the City of North Liberty is no exception. The City Council met to discuss the general fund for the coming fiscal year (FY21), which starts on July 1, in a special session on Tuesday, Jan. 21. City Administrator Ryan Heiar gave councilors a brief overview of budget requests in the categories of Public Safety, Public Works, Culture and Recreation, Community and Economic Development, General Government, and General Fund Revenues with department heads on hand to take questions.
