Spartans head to substate final

Solon pushes past Maquoketa to showdown with 21-0 Monticello

SOLON The Spartans moved to within a game of the state tournament.
Solons varsity boys basketball team advanced to a Class 3A Substate 4 Final against undefeated Monticello with a 63-50 win over the Maquoketa Cardinals Feb. 25 at home.
The Spartans and Panthers squared off Monday, March 1, in Maquoketa for a berth in the state basketball championships at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Solon opened the postseason Feb. 22 hosting South Tama, and powered past the Trojans, 64-30.
It was a tougher time facing Maquoketa.

Solon falls to Monti in substate final

MAQUOKETA– The Spartans made a habit of clawing victory from the jaws of defeat this season.
But the hole was too deep and the opponent too stingy.
The second-ranked Monticello Panthers ended an impressive season for the eighth-ranked Solon varsity boys’ basketball team Monday, March 1, in Maquoketa, retiring the Spartans 45-39 in a Class 3A Substate 4 final.
Solon stayed with the undefeated Panthers early, trailing only 9-7 after the first period. But the Spartans managed only a single point in the second quarter, which was delayed due to a medical issue with the Solon coaching staff.

Tabor to settle in at Lakeview

Floating between two buildings for the 2020-2021 school year

SOLON Jessica Tabor couldnt decide.
When Jodi Rickels retired as principal at Lakeview Elementary, Tabor was tabbed to replace her on an interim basis while the school district waited for the job market to rebound from the COIVD-19 pandemic.
Fresh off her first year as principal at Solon Intermediate School (SIS), Tabor assumed responsibility for both buildings in the 2020-2021 year.
But the Solon Community School District had to eventually fill the hole on its administrative team, and Tabor had to pick between the two elementary schools.

Firehouse bid planned for May

June closing on $3 million financing

SOLON– If all goes smoothly, the Solon City Council will award the construction bid for a new firehouse at a May 19 meeting.
Council members reviewed a tentative timeline for financing the project through Tax Increment Finance (TIF) and Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) dollars at a Feb. 17 session.
According to a schedule presented by City Administrator Cami Rasmussen, $3 million in city bonds could be available by June 16 with groundbreaking some time that month.

Five Clippers earn WaMaC All-Conference Basketball honors

CCA’s Clubb and Traetow named to WaMaC West First Team

TIFFIN– Five Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ basketball players earned WaMaC honors. The WaMaC released its WaMaC East and West Division All-Conference selections on Wednesday, Feb. 24, with Calia Clubb and Whitney Traetow earning West First Team honors. Morgan Etscheidt was named to the Second Team, while Kalin Rotzoll and Emily Sly received the WaMaC Recognition Award.

NORTH LIBERTY– Three of Liberty High’s varsity girls’ basketball players earned Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) honors. The MVC released its All-Division Basketball selections on Wednesday, Feb. 24, with Keiko Ono-Fullard named to the Mississippi Division Second Team, while Ava Meyer and Haley Schroeder earned Honorable Mention.

Bys, Roberson, Turnblom and Brackett earn Honorable Mention

IOWA CITY– Four bowlers on Iowa City West High’s varsity squads earned Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Honorable Mention. The MVC released its All-Division Bowling selections on Wednesday, Feb. 24, with Ryan Bys, Stirlen Roberson, Neena Turnblom and Jordynn Brackett picking up Honorable Mention in the Valley Division.
Bys, a junior, bowled 24 games with a total of 4,516 pins, a high game of 255, and a high score of 469. Roberson, a junior from Clear Creek Amana, also bowled 24 games with 4,544 points, a high game of 235, and a high score of 427.

Kelby Telander leads Liberty in 4A substate semifinal with 19 points in 58-50 victory

NORTH LIBERTY The Liberty High varsity boys basketball team survived a Class 4A Substate 6 semifinal round game against the Davenport North Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 26, at home. The 58-50 win advanced the Lightning to the Substate 6 final on Tuesday, March 2, against Pleasant Valley at Bettendorf, a neutral site, with the winner claiming a berth in the 2021 Class 4A boys state basketball tournament.

TIFFIN The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team had a stellar season with a 12-game winning streak and a second consecutive WaMaC West Championship on the way to a 16-2 conference record. However, an encounter with the Grinnell Tigers in a Class 3A-Subtate 6 quarterfinal contest at home on Monday, Feb. 22, resulted in the end of the season for the Clippers as the Tigers gouged out a 69-58 win to advance.

Steindler Orthopedic inks purchase agreement for land in North Liberty Planning for healthcare development underway

IOWA CITY– Steindler Orthopedic Clinic has entered into a purchase agreement for 34 acres of land located on the east side of Interstate 380 and the Forevergreen Road interchange in North Liberty.
