5 Spartans advance

Solon hosts district tournament Saturday

DeWITT– Five Solon wrestlers will defend their home mats at a district meet Saturday, Feb. 13.
Caleb Ebert (152 pounds), Hayden Taylor (160), Lucas Kampman (170), Lucas TePoel (182) and Gage Marty (220) advanced out of a Class 2A sectional at DeWitt Feb. 6.
Ebert and Taylor took sectional titles. Kampman, TePoel and Marty placed second.
The host Sabers took the team championship with 220.5 points. Camanche and Solon were tied for second with 160.5 in the six-team field. The first- and second-place winners in each weight class moved on to the District 7 tournament at Solon Saturday.

SOLON– The Lady Spartans tasted defeat at the hands of the Beckman Catholic Blazers, 58-52, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at home, yet three players scored in double digits.

Spartans take wins from Beckman and Maquoketa

SOLON– Sixteen wins in a row.
The varsity Spartans moved to 14-0 in the WaMaC Conference and 16-1 overall last week with basketball victories hosting Beckman Catholic and on the road at Maquoketa.
Every possession counted in the 38-36 win at home against Beckman Feb. 2.
“We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game. Beckman is a team that guards hard,” Head Coach Jared Galpin said.


16.6 million visit Iowas state parks in 2020; Lake Manawa, Gull Point top the list

Lake Macbride comes in 10th

COUNCIL BLUFFS– A record 16.6 million visitors frequented Iowa’s state parks in 2020, according to data from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Iowans turned to the outdoors with indoor activities interrupted or cancelled by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Over the last decade, the Iowa DNR saw between 13.7 million and 15.5 million visitors to their state parks yearly.


North Trunk Sewer bid approved

Local contractor, local financing for $1.2 million project

SOLON A local contractor and a local bank will be helping the city finally bring the North Trunk Sewer project to life.
At a Feb. 3 meeting, members of the Solon City Council awarded the contract for construction of the sewer line to BWC Excavating LC of rural Solon with a low bid of $1,212,215.
Financing for the project will come through a 10-year, $1.5 million bond issued by Bridge Community Bank.

SOLON– When he was 2-years-old, Carl Richey’s mother took him to a production of Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man.”
His family was living in Florida at the time, and while Carl doesn’t remember it, the story is he sat through the whole thing, turned to his mom and asked, “Is there any more?”
“I think we knew then I would be involved in music,” he said.
Richey, 21, had the benefit of being exposed to theatre at a young age, and when his family moved to Solon in 2014, the relocated freshman took advantage of everything his new high school had to offer musically.


Mitigation for COVID-19, including mask orders, still in effect in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– As COVID-19 cases remain above their levels from last fall, North Liberty’s mitigation efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 remain in place, its public health initiative has not changed, and a county-wide mask mandate remains in effect.
“The thoughtful efforts of community members and businesses have helped ease the holiday surge of hospitalizations and deaths. But even with this good news, it is premature to let up now,” said Mayor Terry Donahue.

ICCSD students get a day off as staff prepares to welcome them back on the 15th

IOWA CITY– Students in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) will have a three-day weekend starting Friday, Feb. 12, as district staff make the final preparations to a return to 100 percent onsite learning on Monday, Feb. 15.
The move follows legislation signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds on Friday, Jan. 29, requiring school districts to provide a 100 percent onsite option. Parents can still choose a 100 percent virtual (online) learning option if they so desire, but the hybrid model: 50 percent in school and 50 percent online, is gone in the ICCSD.


Corps seeks input on revised Coralville Lake Water Control Plan, plans virtual open house events

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District is finalizing the Coralville Lake Water Control Plan and is seeking public input. Two virtual open house events will be hosted to offer a question-and-answer opportunity for the public and gather feedback about the updated plan. The first virtual event will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. and the second will be Thursday, March 4, at 5 p.m.

IA Secretary of Ag Mike Naig visits Iowa Citys Field to Family

IOWA CITY Iowa is well known as an agricultural state, however up to 90 percent of the states food supply comes from out of state. So says Field to Family, a non-profit organization based in Iowa City, which promotes the consumption of locally grown and produced food by providing education, and operating a food hub.
