Over the years, I’ve documented several times that my father in his prime kept in near perpetual motion doing part-time jobs to go along with his full-time job of deliveryman for Marshall Fields.
He distributed newspapers in the early morning, pumped gas on his lunch hour, drove taxi in the evening, painted houses, fixed cars on weekends and delivered Easter lilies while taking a week’s vacation from the iconic Chicago department store.
On a recent trip home, I learned of a couple more.

Along about the end of October, Midwesterners seem to suddenly realize winter is on its way and there are a lot of things we intended to do during the past summer and fall that have yet to be accomplished. Between mulching the rose bushes and storing away the lawn furniture, we find ourselves scrambling to get to that family reunion put off almost too late again this year. And, didn’t we promise that favorite aunt we wouldn’t miss her 80th birthday party this month, but the visit is going to have to be shortened to two days, rather than the week she invited us for.

CCA’s Trap Shooting Team wraps up the 2017 season

HOMESTEAD– “Pull!” The command sent a bright orange clay disc into the late afternoon sky, followed by the report of a shotgun, a puff of smoke and the target being broken into fragments as the shot hit its mark.
Four more shooters took aim and reduced the targets to chunks before the quintet rotated to their next shooting position. Five shooters, five shots each, and then step aside and let the opposition take their 25 shots.
That’s how a trap shooting match goes.

Women of Troy will compete at state swimming and diving meet

MARSHALLTOWN– Iowa City West High’s swimming and diving team, with members from Liberty High, will compete Friday, Nov. 2 (diving), and Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA (108 Washington, St.) after qualifying for state Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, in regional competition in Marshalltown. The team was second in points behind regional champion Waukee.

CPU sweeps CCA, 3-0, in regional semifinal

CENTER POINT– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball season came to a quick end Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Center Point, as the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CPU) swept them, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18), in a Class 4A regional semifinal match.
The Clippers were un-ranked in Class 4A and held a 23-19 record entering the contest, while the Pointers were the seventh-ranked team with a 31-10 showing.

West’s Bailey Nock comes in second

FORT DODGE– Runners from Clear Creek Amana (CCA), Liberty High and Iowa City West High competed Saturday, Oct. 28, in the 2017 State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge.
West High’s Bailey Nock, a senior, was the runner-up in the Class 4A girls’ race. Nock finished roughly 15 seconds behind winner Paige Horner of Johnston. The West High Women of Troy were fifth in team points behind team champion Johnston, runner-up Dubuque Senior, Waukee and Dubuque Hempstead.
The West High Trojans were 10th in team points with Kolby Greiner, a senior, finishing 29th in 16:20.8.

2017 MVC ALL-Division Cross Country selections

Nock and Greiner nab MVC Athletes of the Year

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) released its 2017 All-Division Cross Country teams Monday, Oct. 23, with Iowa City West High well represented in the Mississippi Division selections.
Bailey Nock and Kolby Greiner were Division Athlete of the Year picks, while Brian Martz (boys) and Mike Parker (girls) earned Coach of the Year titles.
Greiner and Nock both won the Class 4A state qualifying meet Thursday, Oct. 19, in Iowa City and led the Trojans and Women of Troy to the State Meet Saturday, Oct. 28, in Fort Dodge.

West High Trojans roll on to football quarterfinals

IC West blasts CR Washington, 49-7

IOWA CITY– Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor dark of night, nor Cedar Rapids Washington could keep the Iowa City West High Trojans from advancing to the Class 4A football semifinals Friday, Oct. 27, with a 49-7 win over the Warriors on Trojan Field.

Women of Troy sweep Davenport North

IC West wins regional quarterfinal, 3-0, against Wildcats

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy swept the Wildcats of Davenport North, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-10), in a Class 5A Region 7 semifinal match Tuesday, Oct. 24, at West High, and advanced to the regional semifinal on Monday, Oct. 30, against Dubuque Hempstead, at Hempstead.
Senior Colby Greene led West High with nine kills and three solo blocks, junior Claire Overton produced seven, sophomore Rylee Fay made 19 assists and three ace serves with three aces from senior Keimoney Lang, as well.
