Colony Pumpkin Patch campaigns for its corn cannon

Conditional use permits for nighttime flashlight maze, zombie paintball required by Johnson County

NORTH LIBERTY– Patrons of the Colony Pumpkin Patch in North Liberty might have to go without– or at least see less of– one of the farm’s regular attractions this season.
At a North Liberty City Council meeting Tuesday, June 27, owners Dean and Katie Colony requested support of their efforts to keep the “Shootout Shack,” which includes a corn cannon and paintball guns, in operation this year.

Ira homer, Zach Wegmann single provide Solon power

SOLON– “It’s a long game,” Solon head coach Keith McSweeney reminded his players in the dugout.
It was two innings into a Class 3A District 8 baseball final and the Spartans were already down 4-0 to Central DeWitt. The Sabers had knocked around Solon starter Luke Ira and Central DeWitt sophomore Garrett Finley had not allowed a base runner through three innings.

No. 1 Bobcats take two from the Creek Girls

Benton Community wins, 9-5 and 14-8

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s varsity softball team became the latest victims of number one (in Class 4A per the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s June 22 weekly rankings) Benton Community Bobcats on Wednesday, June 28, at home. Benton took the opener, 9-5, and blasted the Clippers, 14-8, in the nightcap.
Benton started game one with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but the Creek Girls took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. The lead was short-lived however, the Bobcats scored two runs in the second and two more in the fourth.

Creek Boys get sixth consecutive win

CCA scraps Anamosa 13-4 and 10-6

ANAMOSA– Cappy’s Boys from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) swept the Blue Raiders of Anamosa in a varsity doubleheader in Anamosa Friday, June 30, and put up their sixth consecutive win. The Clippers took the first game 13-4 and closed out the evening with a 10-6 win, improving their overall record to 13-17 while dropping Anamosa to 1-28.

Creek Girls split with Stormin’ Pointers

7-4 loss, 10-0 shutout win for CCA against CP-U

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers and the Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) Stormin’ Pointers split on the softball diamond Monday, June 26, in the varsity doubleheader in Oxford.
The Pointers pulled off a 7-4 win in the opener with a six-run effort in the top of the fourth inning and an insurance run in the seventh. Abbi Kinnaird and Ainsley Schrock ended a four-inning drought with an RBI groundout by Kinnaird and a two-run homer from Schrock. Karsyn Stratton belted out a solo homer in the seventh for CCA’s fourth and final run of the ballgame.

Trojans whack the Golden Eagles

West sweeps Wahlert, 13-3 and 6-5

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s varsity baseball Trojans improved to 23-6 Monday, June 26, sweeping the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, in Dubuque.
West took the opener, 13-3, with a pair of big innings. The Trojans put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second and had four in the sixth. One West High runner scored in the first and third innings and the Trojans added two in the fifth.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the third and once in the fourth.

Ben Swails Direct Selection for 2017 USSA All American Games 13U Baseball

DES MOINES– Ben Swails, an eighth grader at Clear Creek Amana Middle School, was a Direct Selection for the 2017 USSA All American Games in 13U Baseball. Swails tried out in Des Moines on June 9.
There were only two selections from Iowa selected in 13U. Swails will play on the Central National team Aug. 6-12 in Orlando, Fla., at the ESPN World Wide Sports Complex.
A fundraiser will be held at Throttle Down in Tiffin on July 21 from 5-8 p.m. to help with the costs.

Muskies upset Trojans under threatening skies

Muscatine beats IC West, 6-3

IOWA CITY– Lightning in the western sky ended a non-conference varsity contest between the Iowa City West High Trojans and the Muscatine Muskies Wednesday, June 28, in Iowa City.
The Muskies took the six-inning game, 6-3, after scoring one run in the top of the first inning and two in the second.
The Trojans put up a run in the bottom of the second when Lucas Karwal grounded out allowing a run to score, while a passed ball brought in the second Trojan, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Informational meetings for voters throughout July on CCA $36 million bond referendum

TIFFIN– On Sept. 12, the voters in the Clear Creek Amana Community School District will be voting on a bond referendum of $36 million.
According to Superintendent Tim Kuehl, projects to be completed by this bond include a new elementary building; addition to the high school; gymnasium at Clear Creek Elementary; HVAC upgrade at Amana Elementary; security upgrades at Amana Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary and North Bend Elementary; an additional drive on the west end of the middle school; and additional parking at the high school.

Creek Boys sweep the Stormin’ Pointers

Hallett’s pair of homers clinch 11-inning opener

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity baseball team swept the visiting Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) Monday, June 26, at home in 18 innings.
The Clippers took an 11-inning opening game, 9-8, and sent the Pointers back into their kennels, 10-2, in the nightcap.
Tyler Hallett was the hero of game one as he put the Creek Boys on the scoreboard with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning, belted out a triple in the seventh, and ended the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to break an 8-8 tie.
