New guidelines close SCSD open enrollment

Solon school board approves more space for local growth

SOLON– The Solon school board approved changes which should effectively muzzle open enrollment for at least the upcoming school year.
At a special meeting Aug. 15, board members agreed to new guidelines which lowered the number which triggers the closing of a grade level to open enrollment.
“The takeaway is the new policy would basically close open enrollment for all practical purposes unless we had a very small kindergarten class,” board member Tim Brown said.

Big Rain

Flash flood causes damage to Solon homes, facilities

SOLON– It was a pretty helpless feeling for Public Works Director Scott Kleppe.
Between 6 and 8 inches of rain fell on Solon in a matter of hours Thursday evening, Aug. 11, sending local creeks surging out of their banks and over roads to a level Kleppe had never seen before.
Coupled with a power outage, the flash flooding that followed caused extensive damage to a number of Solon homes and prompted the city to declare a local disaster declaration

The Iowa Hawkeye offense

Hawk Talk

This is the first of a three-part series.
For the next couple of weeks, I’ll talk about the University of Iowa football team’s offense, defense and special teams.
Like I said last week, I missed my first football media press conference in 15 years.
Two of my homeboys, Terry Intveld and Brian Fleck, were the “next-man-in” and took pictures and got some quotes.
Terry has been taking pictures for me for at least seven or eight years.

AMANA– While RAGBRAI may be over, the bike riding season hasn’t ended just yet. The first annual Bike Ride of Iowa County, also known as “BRIC,” is scheduled for Aug. 20. The ride is a scenic 37-mile jaunt through Iowa County beginning in the village of Amana amid the brick buildings of the historic area. The route heads south from Amana to Williamsburg’s classic town square, with its brick paved streets, then past Fireside Winery, near Conroy, before returning to the Amana Colonies. BRIC is more than just a bike ride, there are special foods and events planned at each stop along the route.

Coming clean

Walkin'

As I was saying, the final impetus to remove the stack of drug money from my office closet came when we landed the new minister as the guest of honor at a small dinner party and I was afraid Sabra would uncover the stash in a cleaning frenzy.

Which came first?

Food For Thought

The old conundrum regarding the chicken and the egg might be applied to poets and poetry, as well. The first poem ever composed had to come from the mind of a poet – after all, isn’t a person who writes poetry called a poet? Not that the original poem was ever written, for I expect it preceded written language by a very long time. I do wonder though, did it rhyme?
