Clippers set sail for Des Moines

Creek Boys boys win first ever division championship, CCA sends 11 events to state meet

VAN HORNE- History was made Friday, May 10, for Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School’s boys track and field team as it won its first division championship.
The Clippers ran the table in a Class 3A state qualifying (district) meet at Benton Community High School in Van Horne. The Creek Boys also qualified 11 events for the 2019 state coed meet this week at Drake University in Des Moines.

Liberty qualifies 19 events in Class 4A qualifying meet

IOWA CITY- Liberty High’s Class 4A track and field state qualifying meet was postponed by one day due to cold and windy conditions. Given the final results, one could say it was worth the wait as the Lighting (AKA: the Bolts) qualified 19 events for the 2019 state coed meet.

Viking comeback foils final home match for Spartans

Vinton-Shellsburg takes 2-1 win

SOLON- Solon’s varsity boys dropped to 13-4 after falling to Vinton-Shellsburg 2-1 in the final home soccer match of the season May 10.
Junior Rodney Wittich scored on an assist by senior Luke Yetley with just under four minutes remaining in the first half to give Solon a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings scored twice in the second period on goals by sophomores David Lapan-Islas and Damon Swenson to move to 10-4 on the season.
Senior keeper Ian Johnson recorded four saves against two goals allowed, while Vinton goalie Ethan Rollinger collected 11 saves.

Girls run away with regional title, set their sights on state

Lady Spartans build 75-point lead to win regional title

VAN HORNE- The falling darkness could not hide her wide smile, as Erin Kerkhoff approached the finish line. She anchored the 4x400 relay- the last event at Solon’s state qualifying track meet, May 10, in Van Horne. Having run two earlier 400s, and then the 4x100, 10 minutes prior, it was not her fastest 400. Still, she had enough to cross first, to help log another Solon entry in this week’s Class 3A state meet.

Creek Girls’ season turns 180-degrees from last year

CCA soccer improved from 2-7 to 7-2

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ soccer program had a 2-7 start to the 2018 season and this year improved to 7-2 in a reversal of last year’s fortunes.
The Independence Mustangs handed the Clippers their second loss of the season on Tuesday, April 23, with a 2-1 loss, in Tiffin. Ellen Austin scored the Creek Girls’ only goal in the contest, which saw Indee score in the first minute of each half with the Clippers struggling unsuccessfully to find an equalizer.

IHSAA announces postseason changes

Football and wrestling to see state tournament qualifying adjustments

BOONE– The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced changes to postseason state tournament qualifying Thursday, April 25. The association instituted new qualifying procedures in 2018-19 for football and wrestling, and the board of control met on Wednesday, April 24, to tweak those based on recommendations from sport advisory committees ahead of the 2019-20 postseasons.

Boys 8th at WaMaC Conference Super Meet

Lensing wins shot put, Flansburg second, Diersen third in discus

DeWITT– The Solon Spartans’ boys track and field team competed in the WaMaC Conference Super Meet at Central DeWitt High School and emerged as a team eighth in the 14-team field on Thursday, May 2. The Spartans scored 55.5 team points at the meet, bested by champion Marion with 95, Mount Vernon with 89, Clear Creek Amana with 87, Benton Community with 85, Williamsburg with 83, Vinton-Shellsburg with 63.5 and Center Point-Urbana with 61. South Tama (36), Central DeWitt (30), Beckman (29) Maquoketa (14), West Delaware (10), and Independence (3) completed the competitors.

Lady Spartans fall, 2-1, to Williamsburg

SOLON– The Lady Spartans knocked on the door but got turned away as a result of a shootout after 100 minutes of play in Spartan Stadium on Thursday, May 2, losing 2-1 to the visiting Williamsburg Raiders.

Solon boys win 5th in a row

Spartans shut out Mustangs, 4-0

SOLON- Solon’s boys were on the attack against Mount Vernon.
The varsity soccer team dropped the Mustangs to 2-8 on the season with a 4-0 shut out at Spartan Stadium Friday, April 26.
The Spartans kept Mount Vernon keeper Zach Kolker busy all match. Kolker recorded 24 saves against four goals allowed.
Two of those goals belonged to Solon senior Luke Yetley, with seniors Jorel Justus and Ben McAtee adding one each. Senior Drew Bruck, senior Luke McInnis (two) and sophomore Gabe Yetley were credited with assists.
Senior Ian Johnson recorded two saves in goal for the shutout.

Solon 5th at Pacha Relays

TIFFIN– The Solon Spartans boys track and field team rolled into Tiffin on Thursday, April 25, after the cancellation of the Maquoketa Valley meet earlier in the week due to weather, ready to compete at Clear Creek Amana High School.
Even with some team members competing at the Drake Relays for the weekend, the Spartans captured a consistent fifth-place showing.
