Great horned owl released after rehab

Raptor group responds to call from Twin View

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist
SOLON– It was January. A curious Labrador came within five feet of the scrawny, young owl. The terrified bird perched on a low branch, west of Solon, on public land. It didn’t move. The outlook was bleak.
Fast-forward six weeks. A small crowd walks through the trees to the same spot, near the Coralville Reservoir. With heavy duty gloves, Lacey Slutts reaches into the cardboard pet carrier she totes. From inside, drumming wingbeats indicate the occupant is more than ready to exit.

Slipping and a sliding

I’ve been getting nervous as the date for my party to celebrate the World Champion Cubs Party nears. What if I’ve gone to the trouble and expense to set it up and no one shows? What if too many turn out? What if the Cubs didn’t win the World Series, and it’s all been a dream in which the Cleveland Indians are champs and Bernie Sanders is president?
Trading the Cubs’ victory for a Sanders’ win; that’d be a deal with devil that’d be hard to decide.
Que sera sera!

Slang, idiom, metaphor, poetry

Food For Thought

Four times a month I meet with groups of creative friends with whom I share ideas and accomplishments. Twice each month, the group consists of around 20 people, specifically writers; writers of poetry, fiction, fact and opinion. Another group, all poets, is smaller and while we examine and critique each other’s poems, we have the luxury of time to discuss many related topics that arise out of the discussions of poetry. The third group is made up of professionally successful artists, writers and composers, although the writers make up the majority of members.

Hawkeye women on the brink

The Iowa women had two games last week and needed both of them to have a chance of getting back to the NCAA tournament.
They won the first one at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last Thursday, beating Northwestern 78-59.
Then they went to Purdue on Sunday and lost, 72-52.
Iowa started strong against the Wildcats and finished strong even though Bre Cera and Christina Buttenham were held out because both had suffered concussions in practice.
You start with balance.
Lisa Bluder went with eight players and all eight contributed.

Making a big impact on the littles

Sprout Kids Academy offers top-of-the-line everything

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It was a no-brainer for Aimee Pitlick when she was approached two years ago to be the director of a new childcare facility in Tiffin.
“I missed it. I missed the kids. I missed the work, the good things, the babies,” said Pitlick. “You have such an ability to make such a huge impact on them.”
Having already run Tiffin’s former Busy Bees Preschool and Daycare from 2005-2010, and with a business degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Pitlick was well prepared to take on the task of helping plan a childcare facility from the ground up.
