Phyllis Fiala named one of Solon’s Seniors of the Year

SOLON– Somebody noticed what she’s been doing.
Phyllis Fiala, one of two Seniors of the Year (Jeanne Erhart also was honored) named recently by the Solon Senior Advocates, really couldn’t put her finger on just why she was selected for the annual honor.
“They (Senior Advocates) just decided that we must’ve done something they liked,” she said. “When I do something, I just really don’t like to have my name mentioned. But, somebody knows what you do.”
Indeed they do.
Phyllis said a Senior Advocate came up to her one day at Senior Dining.

My niece Kym got married and it was a great wedding, but it was in Missoula, Mont., on the same weekend as football media day.
Kym and her husband Ryan are Hawkeye fans so it was a great time.
The next three weeks I’ll break down the offense, defense and special teams.

Offensive Line

The Hawkeye offense always starts up front with the offensive line and this years’ group should be one of Iowa’s strengths.

Before Dr. Seuss, even

Food For Thought

It has been said that J. K. Rowling has coaxed more kids into the reading habit in this century than Dr. Seuss did a generation ago. Her Harry Potter stories enchant and entertain adults and kids alike, and while both authors have influenced movies and television, I think their greatest contribution to society has been in the cause of literacy. Tempting children to read, to prefer books to the more passive activity of sitting and watching the screen, not only establishes the reading habit; it requires the exercise of imagination.
