Council kicks in $500 for splash pad promotion

Fundraising committee to recruit help at June 29 Music on Main

SOLON– City council members agreed to prime the pump.
A splash pad committee is seeking to raise over a half-million dollars for a municipal water playground at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area, and the city has agreed to contribute $500 to help boost upcoming fundraising efforts.
The decision was made at the city council’s June 15 meeting.
The volunteer effort dates back to a 2012 survey of residents conducted by the Solon Parks and Recreation Commission seeking guidance for possible capital park improvements.

Some school employees losing cash option

Support staff who decline health insurance will not be able to apply the money toward TSA

The issue
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education held a special meeting May 19 to discuss the benefits structure for employees of the school district. All employees who are opting out of health insurance will see a change.

Operation Dry Water starts June 24

DES MOINES– A group of state, federal and local law enforcement agencies will partner to focus enforcement of Iowa’s boating while intoxicated law as part of the national Operation Dry Water campaign to draw public attention to the hazards of boating under the influence.

Mary’s Meals supporters host Solon 5K Saturday, June 25

SOLON– Local supporters of Mary’s Meals will be hosting a Be a Hunger Hero! 5K/1-mile run/walk Saturday, June 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Timber DOME Lodge at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
Participants are encouraged to dress as super heroes for extra fun. The event is family friendly, with strollers and dogs welcome.

When Nick Gallagher was a senior at West High, he planned on going to school at the University of Iowa… and become a basketball manager.
Iowa’s head baseball coach Rick Heller saw Nick pitch in high school for the West High Trojans and asked the hard-throwing right hander if he would like to try out for the Hawkeye baseball team.

William D. “Bill” Upmeyer, 91, of Maquoketa, passed away on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa.
A celebration of Bill’s life was held Monday, June 20, at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation was Sunday, June 19, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Graveside services and burial were held Monday at Oakland Cemetery, Solon.

Robert John “Bob” Stinocher

Robert John “Bob” Stinocher, 89, of Solon, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, surrounded by his wife and family. Celebration of life services were held Friday, June 17, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery, where full military rites were conducted the Solon American Legion, Stinocher Post 460.
