Food For Thought

It was an item on a newscast. One out of three patients encounters mistakes while hospitalized. Everything from amputating the wrong leg to bringing the wrong food tray to a patient on a restricted diet. I’ve been hospitalized at least a dozen times in my lifetime– stays that were more than just overnights– and any mistakes I encountered were non-threatening and, usually negligible.

I had a sudden urge to make and eat a double batch of potato salad last week.
It’s got something to do with my ancestry. The Polish side of me makes my feet get happy when I hear polka music, and the German side cries out for kartoffelsalat every now and then.
Luckily for my health, it’s an urge that I have less often as I grow older and wider.


Geraldine Comer

Geraldine “Gerry” Comer, 80, formerly of Ottumwa, died peacefully at 11:53 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon.
She was born May 12, 1931, in Lovilia, Iowa, to Andrew and Elizabeth (Yarkosky) Gasper. She married John J. Comer on Aug. 4, 1951. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2001.
A graduate of Albia High School in 1949, she was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar & Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of Americas. She directed the choir at St. Patrick Catholic Church for 38 years.


Robert Hardy

Mr. Robert Eldon Hardy, 74, of North Liberty, died Friday, June 3, 2011. Services were held June 8 at the New London Christian Church.


Ron Hruby

Ron “Sarge” Hruby, 50, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, June 4, 2011. Services were held June 10 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mike Hruby. Burial was in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his mother, Lois Hruby, two brothers, Mike (Dawn) Hruby of Mission, Kan., and Denny (Linda) Hruby of Solon; nephew, Robbie Hruby, and niece, Elizabeth (Eric) York; and a special friend, Michelle.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry.


John McMurrer

John McMurrer, of Iowa City, died in his sleep following months of struggle with declining health on June 4 at Solon Care Center in Solon. Prior to moving to Iowa City in 2005, John lived for 40 years in Salina, Kan., the place he called home.
John served in the US Marine Corps during WWII. He graduated from Georgetown University, after which he worked as an FBI agent until his retirement in 1978.


Jack Miller

A memorial has been planned for Jack Edward Miller, 67, on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Bobber’s Grill, 1850 Scales Bend Road, North Liberty, from 3-6 p.m. Please come and join us to celebrate Jack with good stories and good friends.


Claire Wims

Claire DeVonne “Connie” Wims, 82, formerly of Fairfax, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Services were held June 9 at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor Jim Coyle. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery.
Connie is locally survived by her half-brother, Jack Hardin of Swisher.

This is the second part of flashback to 1977.
Bob Commings was in his fourth year as head coach for Iowa football and Lute Olsen was also in his fourth year as head basketball coach for the Hawks. Dan Gable was in his second year as the head man for wrestling.
Jimmy Carter was president and a postage stamp cost 13 cents.
Oakland won the Super Bowl and the Yankees took the World Series.
Portland won the NBA title and Marquette was the NCAA basketball champion.
Star Wars dominated the movies and the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, died August 16 at his home at Graceland.
