Free honeybee program to be held July 18

SOLON– Beekeeper and state park manager Ron Puettmann will be holding this year’s second honeybee program near Lake Macbride State Park primitive campground on Saturday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m. This interpretive series on honeybees and beekeeping offers participants the opportunity to examine the inside of a real beehive from the security of screened tents located next to the hive.


Deadline for ICCSD election July 30

IOWA CITY– The residents of the Iowa City Community School District will elect three directors in the school election, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009.
Any person who is a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age or older, and a resident of the school district may become a candidate for the school board.


County agrees to proceed with inspection of Sutliff Bridge

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors took another step in deciding the fate of the historic Sutliff Bridge last Thursday.
At their informal meeting on July 2, the supervisors unofficially agreed to enter into contract with VJ Engineering of Iowa City to conduct an inspection and feasibility study on the bridge, part of which was destroyed by flooding in June 2008.
County Engineer Greg Parker said just two firms responded to a committee’s Request for Qualifications (RFQ) sent to consultants.


NL Council approves 09-10 salaries

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council has approved city staff salaries for the upcoming fiscal year.
For the year beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2010, the city’s overall salary budget is $4.776 million, a total that includes employee’s contractual benefits such as health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave.
In March, the council voted to give city employees across the board a 2 percent cost of living wage increase, and instituted a freeze on merit pay for the new fiscal year.


Ride on: group of retired farmers roll into town

NORTH LIBERTY– When this group of retirees gathers for lunch, it’s an all day thing.
After all, it takes awhile to get anywhere on a vintage farm tractor.
A group of between six and nine retired farmers, most hailing from around the Fairfax, Norway and Ely area, get together in the mornings for coffee and a daily chat. Sometime in 2003 or 2004, Gordon Ruegsegger suggested he and his buddies also do lunch– all driving their tractors that date back to the 1950s and 60s.


North Liberty doubles in size

DES MOINES– New population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau indicate North Liberty has doubled in size in the last ten years, while three-quarters of Iowa's incorporated places lost population this decade.
The Census Bureau estimated that 700 cities lost population, 228 gained, and 18 had no change between April 1, 2000 and July 1, 2008.
Iowa's total population was 3,002,555, up by 2.6 percent since the 2000 census.

James Kenneth \Ken\ Grable, 60, formerly of Iowa City died Thursday, June 25, 2009. A gathering for family and friends was held on Wednesday, July 1, at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Services at the graveside for family were held at the Nichols Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to a fund for his grandchildren or Hospice Compassus of Davenport. Lillian Mae Hipple

Lillian Mae Hipple, 96, of Tipton, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton from natural causes.
Visitation was held on Thursday at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton. Service was Friday with Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial was held at Red Oak Cemetery, Tipton.


Ethel Georgia King

Ethel Georgia King of North Liberty died on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Georgia was born to Addison Kistle and Louise (Unger) Kistle on July 28, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the fourth of six children: Addison Junior (Bud), Elizabeth Kilibarda, Stella, Julia Gibson (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Eleanor Brown (San Mateo, Calif.). Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kent, brother Bud, and two of her sisters, Elizabeth and Stella.


Gertrude Louise “Gert” Albaugh Kurth

Gertrude Louise “Gert” Albaugh Kurth, 75, of Marion, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in her Cedar Rapids home from a brief illness. Funeral service was held on Sunday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices in Mount Vernon Chapel by the Reverend Jen Filter. Private family burial was held on Monday in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
