NL to flush hydrants for next three weeks

NORTH LIBERTY – The North Liberty water department will be flushing hydrants throughout town beginning on Monday, April 27 and for the following three weeks, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. People should avoid doing laundry during those hours. Iron deposits flushed through the system are safe but may stain clothing, so refrain from doing laundry until your taps run clear if you notice discolored water.

Loretta Marlene Davisson, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died at Mercy Medical Center on Monday, April 20, 2009, after an extended illness. Services were held Friday, April 24 at St. Patrick Catholic Church by Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday and Friday at Teahen Funeral Home.


Edward C. Freeman

Edward C. Freeman, 83, of Center Point, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, from emphysema. Services were held Thursday, April 23, at First Christian Church in Center Point by Rev. John Caughron, Rev. Jeff Ginn, and Rev. Galen Banashak. Visitation was April 22 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point. Burial was in Dunkard Cemetery, rural Toddville, with military honors.


Harold M. Knight

Harold M. Knight, 99, of Strawberry Point, died Wednesday morning, April 22, 2009, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, April 27, at United Methodist Church, Strawberry Point, by the Rev. Ronald Blix. Interment was in Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point. Visitation was Sunday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Strawberry Point, and one hour before services Monday at the church.


Richard Wayne Leland

Richard Wayne Leland, 79, of Ackley died on April 23, 2009 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Visitation was held on Monday, April 27 at Parrot & Wood Chapel of Memories. Military rites were conducted by Becker-Chapman Post #138, American Legion and Waterloo Post 1623 Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. Burial was held in Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo.


Elaine K. (Tomash) Summer

Elaine K. (Tomash) Summer, 60, Dubuque, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009. Services were Wednesday, April 22, in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. Visitation was held Tuesday at Behr’s Funeral Home.


Gladys M. Sweet

Gladys M. Sweet, 82, of Solon, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Memorial services were held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 26, at Out Lord’s Church in Solon, with the Rev. Renee Lunemann officiating. Memorial donations can be made in Gladys's memory to Our Lord's Church, Solon United Methodist Church, Solon Nursing Care Center, Amenity Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice. Walkin'

As a mailman I got to know many a dog.There were a couple of Dobermans, for example, which camped out behind the door with the mail slot. With my first footfall on their property they would go into a snarling frenzy, sticking their narrow snouts out the slot while snapping their teeth like investment bankers anticipating a government handout. Holding the mail gingerly from one end, I’d feed it to the canines one piece at a time. Just audible among the snorts and growls, I could hear the day’s mail being torn to shreds.

History is about people. It’s about you and me and the things we do, both as individuals and as a community. The Solon History Group has been making strides – well, maybe baby steps – toward assuring that the unique stories of our community are not forgotten. Solon and other Johnson County towns played important roles in the settlement and development of this part of the state. Its population has its own character, its history is an intriguing story, its place in the annals of the county and the state are essential parts of Iowa’s picture.
