hit the greens

SOLON– Every shot’s a hole-in-one at the National Veterans TEE Tournament.
Solon High School students joined Veterans Affairs (VA) volunteers and other community members in September as visually impaired veterans took to the greens at the Lake MacBride Golf Course.
The TEE (Training, Exposure and Experience) Tournament, one of the VA’s six national rehabilitation programs, provides legally blind veterans an opportunity to develop new skills and strengthen their self-esteem through adaptive golf and bowling.

Lady Spartans open season with win at Vinton

VINTON– Led by sophomore Rylee Smith’s 11 steals and 16 points, the Lady Spartans took to the basketball court for the first game of the season last week, a 53-26 win over Vinton-Shellsburg.
“I was very proud of the way we played defense,” said Solon Head Coach Mark Sovers. Solon collected 22 steals on the night and helped generate offense during the season opener.
The Lady Spartans lost a majority of last year’s scoring– Kelsey Dircks, Danielle Herdliska and Brie Winegar– to graduation. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this group will step into those roles,” Sovers said.

SMS hosts Veterans Day program

SOLON– Solon Middle School honored local veterans this Veterans Day with music, poetry, handmade cards, and refreshments.
Members of the American Legion executed the ceremonial Advance to Colors as eighth grade trumpet players Monica Moss, Suma Janacek and Chad Thielen played “Call to the Colors.” The national anthem was then played on the tubas by Kale Altman and Ben Krutzfeldt. A veteran in attendance declared that never in his 90 years had he heard the national anthem performed by tubas.

NL Pantry responds to demand

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) will be open two more hours per week beginning in December. The NLCP has had a steady increase in visits over the last two years with a 14 percent increase in 2010, and a 14 percent increase during the first 10 months of 2011. Visits averaged 470 per month during 2011. The small pantry building limits the number of families that can be assisted during open hours.

It’s budget season

NORTH LIBERTY– Much as Black Friday marks the beginning of the frenzied holiday shopping push, November is the season for cities to begin foraging the halls of municipal finance, and take inventory of what’s still on the shelves, what needs to be purchased and how much money there is to pay for it all.
The North Liberty City Council started its FY2013 budget process with a work session Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Johnson County will notify North Liberty of its total property valuations closer to the first of the year; until then, revenue figures from future property taxes are based on estimates.

Prepare to head east?

NORTH LIBERTY– Fast on the heels of the recently adopted annexation agreement between the cities of North Liberty and Coralville, developers are already sniffing out property on the county’s side of North Liberty’s eastern border.
According to City Administrator Ryan Heiar, city planners have heard from developers interested in developing to the east.

Rising above adversity

TIFFIN— Aaron Thomas and the students, staff and parents of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district have something in common; they are familiar with trying to make sense out of senseless tragedies.
For CCA, it’s coping with the deaths of three students in three years, the most recent in October when Mackenzie Lown was killed near the high school in an accident that injured several others.

Board fields queries from critic

IOWA CITY– The school board recently rearranged its meeting agenda, putting “Community Comment” near the top of the schedule.
At the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Nov. 22 meeting, Phil Hemingway, a City High parent and one-time board candidate, took five minutes during time allowed for public input to make several suggestions for the district.

Reconstruction bids for Sutliff Bridge well below estimate

SUTLIFF– A drop in the price of steel means a smaller price tag for rebuilding the historic Sutliff Bridge.
Tim McDermott with VJ Engineering presented the six bids his firm had received for the project at a Tuesday, Nov. 22, informal meeting of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
The high bid came from Taylor Construction at $2,332,327, which was close to the original estimate. The low bid, which will be formally approved at the next board meeting, came from Iowa Bridge and Culvert for $1,582,097.95.
