Girls win WaMaC; boys take third

MOUNT VERNON– A warm, windy day… a fast start… and another cross country title for Solon’s girls. It was a two-team race at the WaMaC meet Oct. 13 in Mount Vernon. Solon grabbed three of the top eight spots in the 93-runner field to hold off Williamsburg, which used better finishes from its four and five runners to stay close. It was the first conference title for Solon since 1997, when it took the EIHC crown… also in Mount Vernon.

Sections of Jones Boulevard to reopen

NORTH LIBERTY– Beginning last Friday, Oct. 14, Jones Boulevard in North Liberty is now closed from Zeller Street to Penn Street for the next phase of the road’s reconstruction. The City of North Liberty is asking drivers to follow detour signs directing traffic along Penn Street to Highway 965 and down Zeller Street to the southern section of Jones Boulevard.
Patrons of the North Liberty Community Pantry and the First United Methodist Church will be able to access those buildings through a temporary entrance off Jones Boulevard, accessed via Zeller Street.

Safer steps

JOHNSON COUNTY– Hip fractures sustained in falls can be the first slippery step in a downward decline for the elderly.
People who fall and break bones can become dependent on others for food and doctor visits. If confined to bed or unable to get around, overall health can quickly deteriorate when someone’s seemingly small injury affects general health, mobility and independence.
Seniors are especially vulnerable to the effects of falls, often cracking wrists, legs and hip bones that can break more easily as bones become more brittle with age.
