J-Hawks get the blues

CEDAR RAPIDS— It was pretty much over at halftime.
To say Iowa City West dominated Cedar Rapids Jefferson Friday night at Kingston Stadium would be an understatement. The Trojans rolled the J-Hawks from the start, scoring on the first possession of the game with a 1-yard run by quarterback Charles Rogers. A Rogers to Dondre Alexander pass followed by a successful two-point play by Anthony Brown gave West a 15-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

CCA Clippers volleyball still on a roll

TIFFIN— The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers volleyball team brought a 15th- place ranking, believed to be the team’s first such appearance, home last Tuesday night for a showdown with the Vikettes from Vinton-Shellsburg. After four hard-fought games, the Clippers vanquished the Vikettes 3-1.
Brian Bronzynski’s crew has won five of their last seven matches, putting up wins over Williamsburg (WaMaC), Hudson, Alburnett, Monticello (Lisbon tournament), as well as the Vikettes. The wins brought the Clippers to a 15-7-0 record.

West reclaims The Spike

IOWA CITY— The Iowa City West High Women of Troy and the City High Little Hawks have battled annually since 1982 for a golden railroad spike on a marble base. Called “The Spike,” the trophy is the Iowa City prep volleyball equivalent to the rival football teams’ “Boot.”
Last year, after three years of residence at West, the Little Hawks prevailed 3-2 to take The Spike away.
This year, the Women of Troy traveled to City High on a mission to bring home the trophy. With a 3-1 victory, The Spike came home and West’s record improved to 19-5-0 for the season thus far.

Here’s the beef

IOWA CITY– When Johnson County Supervisor Pat Harney sat in on a local forum about hunger, he learned about food shortages at local food banks and came up with an idea to beef up support to those in need.
Along with his wife Jean, Harney rounded up the assistance of 20 donors from all over the county to help in a significant way. Harney and company bought a two-year-old heifer raised by Clear Creek Amana graduate Stephanie Fisher. Fisher’s cow was a reserve champion at the county fair; weighing in at 1,045 pounds. It sold for $1,200.

Food For Thought

Several years ago I wrote about four words for happiness. Those words were Love, Learn, Share and Play, and I consider them all to be necessary in order to be happy. We have to make time for each in our busy lives, and we never reach a point where we are ‘done’ with any of them. For a long time, I thought that the element of creativity was inherent in most of those four concepts. It seems I may have been mistaken. Since that time I’ve observed a number of cases where people who include those four things in their lives still seem to feel something is missing.

Walkin'

Cycling back to Alton, we then drove to our next destination, St. Genevieve, Mo.
As its website proclaims, “This is a charming, laid-back town where bicycles don’t need locks and people stroll in and out of inviting little shops filled with antiques, crafts and wine.” It’s also the oldest settlement by Europeans in Missouri and many historical sites have been preserved.
