CORALVILLE– ABC Network has ratings watchers talking because the broadcaster has continuously captured the eyes of millions on Monday nights for 16 consecutive weeks, a success that the network hasn’t had since 1997.
Show topics focus on issues that viewers can identify with and express sympathy toward: love, crime, hospitals and weight loss – specifically Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. It’s the second of two shows that helped attract over 10 million viewers on June 27, according to Nielsen Ratings.

Victory in Ft. Dodge

FORT DODGE — As always, they came to win it all.
Last year, following the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ 4-1 loss in the championship runner-up game, Coach Jim White said “they didn’t come up here to play for third.”

CCA pulls out first round win: Clippers 6, Hawks 5

FORT DODGE — It took nine innings to do it, but the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers squeezed out a 6-5 win over the Hawks of West Delaware in the first round of the Class 3A State Softball Tournament.
Heat and humidity combined for a heat index north of 100 degrees as the teams assembled on diamond 2 of the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex. The Hawks turned up the heat in the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI double and a 2-0 lead.

The boys are back

IOWA CITY — The third time could be the charm.
The past two seasons have found the West High Trojans bringing home the Class 4A Runner-Up banner rather than a baseball State Championship. Defeating rival City High Wednesday evening punched the Trojans’ ticket to Des Moines for another shot at the top.
City has been something of a punching bag for the Trojans this season, as the men in green spanked City each of three outings, and beat the Little Hawks badly enough to invoke the ten-run mercy rule twice.

Bands bring cool shade of blue to hot weekend fest

NORTH LIBERTY– Now reappearing: the fifth annual Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ festival, with the help of some new and additional talent.
This Saturday, July 23, the grills will be re-fired, the tents re-staked and the amps rewired, as blues fest organizers prepare for a rescheduled date. Originally scheduled for May 29, morning thunderstorms damaged tents and left inches of standing water on the grassy fields of the event site.

Food For Thought

The farm near Perry and Woodward in Dallas County, was in my memory the place where my grandparents lived the longest of all the farms they had rented and worked during their life together. Possibly because Grandpa’s health was failing and he had pretty much turned the running of the farm over to his two eldest sons, his wanderlust had abated and he was content to stay in one place. Most of my farm memories take place in that oddly-put-together house, which apparently had been two houses joined into one, with a couple of small additions tacked on when more space was needed.
