Food For Thought

Emptying the nest

Since my children grew up and my life no longer has been filled with sports gear, Levis that needed patching, and a mysteriously and perennially empty cookie jar, my fondest wish and overriding ambition has been to simplify my life.

Kevin Wilkerson

Kevin Wilkerson of North Liberty passed away at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.
He is survived by his wife Natlie Kay Wilkerson; a daughter, Genevieve (and Jason) Migala; a grandson, Jackson Migala; and siblings Bob and Ann Wilkerson of Ottumwa, Norm and Sandy Wilkerson of Cedar Rapids, Cindy and Bill Wall of Minnesota, Dan and Kim Wilkerson of North Liberty, and Janice Wilkerson of Columbus, Ohio.
Kevin was the son of Shirley and Ed Wilkerson of Ottumwa.
Kevin was the proud owner of Quality PC and Quality Textile Printing of North Liberty.

Lady Spartans win fifth in a row

SOLON– Rylee Smith shot only two free throws against Central DeWitt.
They came with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Spartans needed them to break a 37-37 tie.
Smith sank them both. They were the second and third point scored by Solon in the fourth quarter of a game which the Lady Spartans controlled in the first half, and almost let slip away in the second.
Solon’s girls defeated Central DeWitt, 39-37, last week at home, then traveled to Manchester Friday for a 53-35 thumping over West Delaware.

Christmas wishes

Hunter Jones, 7, told Santa she wants a parrot and a trampoline for Christmas. She was visiting jolly old St. Nick at Bridge Community Bank in Solon.

Kathleen M. Wright

Kathleen M. Wright, 50, of Swisher, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics due to injuries sustained from a car accident on Oct. 4.
Funeral Mass was held Dec. 12 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha, with Father Mark Ressler and Deacon Dennis Mulherin officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Kathleen Marie Wright was born on March 1, 1962, to Caroll and JoAnn (Murphy) Clauson in Cedar Rapids. She was united in marriage to Bruce David Wright on June 3, 1989, in Cedar Rapids.

Jan Hieber

Jan Louise (Berry) Hieber, 71, of rural Iowa City, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at the Solon Care Center.
Funeral services were held Dec. 19 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Iowa City with burial and grave dedication at Oakland Cemetery, Solon.

Marjeane Lynne Easley

Marjeane Lynne Easley was born on July 16, 1954, in Jacksonville, N.C., the daughter of Margaret Kunkel and Eugene Kunkel.  She passed from this life on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, in Payson, Ariz., having reached the age of 58.

Elmer Grissel Jr.

Elmer Grissel Jr., 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Private services were held at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial was at Rogers Grove Cemetery.
He was almost a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Local survivors include his son Timothy (Gayle) Grissel of Solon.

Edwin ‘Ted’ Choate Jr.

Edwin James “Ted” Choate Jr. of LeClaire, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, in Rock Island, Ill.
Ted was born on Sept. 12, 1932, in Chicago, to Edwin J. and Ruth (Sharky) Choate. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist for over 50 years and was president of Mays Drug Inc.
Earlier in life he served in the United States Navy, stationed in Cuba, where he met his wife of over 57 years, Lois Rose Pin.
Ted and Lois were members of Our Lady of the River Catholic Church in LeClaire.

Daniel Besler

Daniel J. Besler, of Milpitas, Calif., passed away at his home in Milpitas on Dec. 2, 2012, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Dan was born in Dubuque, on Oct. 5, 1950, a twin to brother Dick, son of Margene (Reiff) and Urban J. Besler of Hopkinton. He grew up in rural Hopkinton, graduated from Western Dubuque High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1971. He spent much of his adult life at sea and living on land in California. In 1989, Dan met the love of his life, Trina Villicana and they married in 1991. After 21 years of service, Dan retired from the Navy in 1992.
