Creek boys take third at Ruth Ahrens Invitational

MARENGO– Though buffeted by wind and chilled by cold temperatures, the Clear Creek Amana boys’ track and field team picked up a third-place team finish Tuesday, April 10, at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational.
Dillon Villhauer won the 400-meter dash with a 53.94 seconds performance, Jack Murray won the 1600-meter run in 4:52.78, and the shuttle hurdle relay crew (Aaron Campbell, Tanner Bandy, Tyler Kasper and Villhauer) won their event in 1:03.26.
Results:
Long jump: 2, Kam Kahler, 16 feet,11-3/4 inches.
High jump: 2, Tanner Bandy, 5 feet, 6 inches.

West girls top in Ft. Madison

FORT MADISON– Tuesday, April 10, found the Iowa City West High track and field girls in action at the Timm Lamb Pen City Relays. The Women of Troy topped the field in Class A with 126 points, well ahead of second-place Mt. Pleasant (105) and MVC foe CR Jefferson (74).

Long-awaited 120th street reconstruction begins in Shueyville

SHUEYVILLE– Residents of this northwest Johnson County community, and commuters passing through, will soon become accustomed to the sight of orange barriers, detour signs and heavy machinery.
The long-discussed, long-awaited and much anticipated rebuilding of 120th Street is on.

Tiffin approves 2012-2013 budget

TIFFIN— The City Council approved the 2012-2013 budget Wednesday, April 11, during their regular monthly meeting at the Springmier Community Library.
The city’s property tax levy will be $11.97 per $1,000 valuation on regular property, no change from last year. Agricultural land subject to Tiffin’s levy will see a rate of $3.00304 per $1,000 of valuation.

NL woman accused of fraud follows with suit against partner

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty woman was arrested March 30 and charged with fraud after her business partner accused her of misusing company funds to cover personal expenses.
She followed the arrest by filing a suit against her accuser.

Soccer referees needed for youth soccer league

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department is looking for referees to officiate spring soccer games. Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Knowledge of soccer rules and previous officiating experience is preferred but not required. If interested please contact Travis Young at travis.young@solon-iowa.com

Don Sheldon

Don L. Sheldon, 83, of Oakland, Calif., died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Piedmont Gardens in Oakland. Mr. Sheldon was born on May 3, 1928, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of Raymond H. and Nellie H. (Pease) Stunkel. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Oakland. He was a Korean War veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He married Wilma Layton in Westport, Indiana on Jan. 28, 1951.
Local survivors include Nikolai Stalkfleet and Jonathan (Allison) Stalkfleet, all of North Liberty.

Barbara Sternad

Barbara Kay Meade Sternad, 76, died peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at her home in Iowa City.
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 14 at St. Peter’s in Cosgrove, with the Rev. Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Meals on Wheels or Iowa City Hospice.
Barbara was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Iowa City to Cletus James and Esther (Stanton) Meade. She graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1953. Barb married Donald William Sternad on Dec. 13, 1954, in Fairfax. Donald died in 1983.

Rosemary Tumey

Rosemary Louise Tumey, 90, of Ryan, died at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, April 8, 2012. She was born on July 19, 1921, in Alcomdale, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (McGirl) Morin.
Mass of the Resurrection was held April 12 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan. The celebrant was the Rev. John Flaherty. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Rosemary was united in marriage to Leslie F. Tumey on Feb. 18, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Five children were blessed to this marriage. Together they farmed near Ryan.

Brett Smith

Brett Smith, 19, of Solon, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Celebration of Life services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is handling arrangements.
