Back in the swing of things

TIFFIN– It got off to a bit of a rocky start.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team shook off some early-game rust and picked up a win in the opening match of the season last week.
The Lady Spartans started with a cross-conference, cross-county meeting of ranked 4A teams, traveling to Tiffin to take on Clear Creek Amana (CCA) last Thursday.
It took four games, but Solon came away with the win, 25-19, 25-27, 26-24, 25-19.

New field christened with win

SOLON– Over 3,000 fans crowded into Spartan Stadium for the football opener versus the Mount Vernon Mustangs Friday night.
The visitors got the first score on the new field on a Logan Walker touchdown pass, but the Spartans prevailed for the first win, 21-11.

CEDAR RAPIDS– First meet, first trophy, as Solon’s girls came home with the hardware; division champions in the Aug. 25 Prairie High School Cross Country Invitational. Solon’s boys finished well, too, grabbing fourth place in the eight-team race.

Homeowners’ request takes on water in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– Any thoughts of getting city assistance for upkeep on the Penn Prairie Pond were washed away last week.
The majority of the North Liberty City Council members agreed there was nothing the city could do to alleviate the algae growth in the wet detention pond in Penn Prairie subdivision, financially or otherwise.

A new angle solves Tiffin impasse

TIFFIN— It seems the end may finally be in sight for planning and designs for Ireland Avenue.
A plethora of agenda items awaited the Tiffin City Council, now down to three members with the resignations of Chris Ball and Travis Weipert, as they met in regular session on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in the Springmier Library. Councilors Peggy Upton, Jim Bartels and Mike Ryan were in attendance with Mayor Steve Berner and city manager/clerk Michon Jackson.

Will ICCSD get size wise?

IOWA CITY– Capacities at Iowa City West and City High are near the ideal size for high schools, according to a report. And a new 1,000-student high school would also fit in the sweet spot of high school enrollment sizes.
Get too big and educators can lose sight of troubled students who need help.
Go too small and students can suffer from lack of course offerings.
A Hanover Research report examined by the board of the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) confirmed the predicted size for a new high school in the district.

A second shot at success

TIFFIN– Twenty percent of high school students in Iowa fail to graduate, according to Boostup.org, a national high school dropout prevention initiative by a partnership between the Ad Council and the United States Army.
At the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, three students in grades nine through 12 dropped out in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the Iowa Department of Education. The number is lower than neighboring Solon (where seven dropped out in the same year) or Iowa City, which had 94 students quit.
But even one student lost is one too many.
